Job Description

Performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of sewer mains, lines, connections, laterals and appurtenances; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class differs from that of the Sewer Maintenance Repairer II in that the Sewer Maintenance Repairer I performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of sewer mains, lines, connections, laterals and appurtenances; whereas the Sewer Maintenance Repairer II supervises and participates in sewer maintenance work. The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position. Cleans clogged sewer lines and outfalls; Installs connections to sewer lines; Cuts pipe and installs saddle wyes in tapping cast iron or clay sewer mains to install service laterals; Caulks joint with oakum and pours joint of lead or molten joint compound; Constructs reinforced concrete and brick masonry manholes including appurtenances; Repairs broken or leaking cast iron, concrete, or clay sewer mains by replacement or restoration, using lead, concrete, or hydraulic cement; Uses centrifugal pumps, air compressors, pneumatic tools, concrete mixers, mechanical blowers, sandblasting equipment, electric generators, power sewer-cleaning machines, and hand tools necessary in the maintenance and repair of sewers; Supervises the work of helpers.
Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and four years of experience as an apprentice or helper under a journey level plumber or sewer maintenance repairer.
License Requirement:
Possession of a valid Hawaii State driver's license (Type 3).
Knowledge of:
tools, power driven equipment, materials and practices used in installing, maintaining and repairing pipelines and/or sewer systems; occupational hazards and safety practices used in connection with sewer construction and maintenance work.
Ability to:
yarn and caulk pipe; use power and hand tools and make simple adjustments on equipment; read sketches and drawings; make emergency repairs; understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Health and Physical Condition:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.
