Hands-on Field Service Controls Technician supporting installation, startup, troubleshooting, and service of automated machinery at customer sites. Heavy travel role (65-75%) supporting clients across the U.S., Canada, and occasional international locations. This individual acts as the technical expert on-site and remotely. Top Priorities / Candidate Profile:
Strong electrical troubleshooting experience with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex equipment and system issues. Experience working with PLC and HMI platforms, preferably Allen-Bradley and Siemens systems. Ability to navigate PLC programs and perform minor modifications and adjustments as needed. Willingness and ability to travel extensively, with travel requirements ranging from 65-75%. Hands-on mechanical aptitude, including exposure to welding, soldering, or similar technical repair and maintenance activities. Strong communication and customer service skills with the ability to provide direct technical support and build positive customer relationships. Self-motivated problem solver capable of working independently in field service and customer-facing environments. Comfortable troubleshooting, maintaining, and optimizing industrial equipment to support operational performance and customer satisfaction. Key Responsibilities:
Lead the installation, startup, and commissioning of automated machinery at customer facilities, ensuring successful system integration and performance. Travel to customer sites to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair equipment while providing exceptional technical support. Perform electrical diagnostics and PLC troubleshooting to resolve operational issues and minimize downtime. Deliver remote technical assistance through phone, email, and online support tools to address customer concerns efficiently. Partner with engineering teams during machine testing, runoffs, and pre-shipment validation to ensure equipment quality and readiness. Train customers and junior technicians on equipment operation, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting best practices. Prepare detailed field service reports documenting service activities, findings, and corrective actions. Identify potential equipment issues during in-house builds and contribute recommendations for continuous improvement and product reliability. Serve as a trusted technical resource, supporting customer success through strong communication, problem-solving, and hands-on expertise. Required Qualifications:
Associate degree, technical certification, or equivalent training in Electrical Engineering, Automation Technology, or a related field preferred. Minimum of 2-3 years of hands-on experience in automation, material handling systems, machine controls, or industrial equipment environments. Working knowledge of electrical systems, controls, and industrial automation technologies. Experience troubleshooting and diagnosing PLC-controlled equipment and automated systems. Ability to manage multiple projects, service calls, and priorities in a fast-paced environment. Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly explain technical information to customers, technicians, and internal teams. Detail-oriented and organized with a commitment to delivering high-quality customer service and technical support. Proven ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with engineering, operations, and customer-facing teams. Strong problem-solving skills with a hands-on approach to equipment troubleshooting, installation, and continuous improvement initiatives. Must-Haves (Non-Negotiable): Experience working with industry-leading PLC platforms, including Allen-Bradley and Siemens control systems. Ability to navigate PLC programs, troubleshoot logic, and perform minor program modifications when necessary. Strong electrical troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve equipment, controls, and automation-related issues. Proven experience supporting automated machinery, industrial controls, or material handling equipment in a field service or manufacturing environment. Willingness and ability to travel extensively throughout the United States and Canada, with travel requirements of approximately 65-75%. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a hands-on approach to equipment diagnostics and repair. Ability to work independently in customer-facing environments while maintaining a high level of professionalism and service excellence. Effective communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts and solutions to customers and internal teams. Preferred / Nice-to-Have:
Experience working with Human Machine Interface (HMI) systems in industrial automation environments. Familiarity with configuring, navigating, and troubleshooting HMI platforms to support machine operation and diagnostics. Exposure to leading HMI technologies, with recent hands-on experience strongly preferred. Ability to interpret HMI screens, alarms, and system data to assist with equipment troubleshooting and performance optimization. Understanding of the relationship between HMI systems, PLC controls, and automated machinery operations. Strong technical aptitude with the ability to quickly learn and adapt to new HMI platforms and control technologies. Work Environment / Physical Requirements:
Ability to safely lift and move up to 50 pounds without assistance. Comfortable working in industrial and manufacturing environments with varying temperatures and noise levels. Capable of standing for extended periods while performing installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting activities. Ability to frequently bend, kneel, and perform physical tasks required for equipment servicing and repair. Comfortable climbing ladders, accessing elevated work areas, and working in confined spaces as needed. Physically capable of meeting the demands of a hands-on field service role while maintaining safety and quality standards.
