Job Description

Public Works Technician Pay Range and Benefits $40,000-$55,000 based on experience and abilities Medical and Vision Insurance Texas Municipal Retirement System The Public Works Technician provides a variety of construction, maintenance and repair services to roads, adjacent public right-of-way property, drainage systems, concrete projects, water distribution system, wastewater collections system, parks, and city facilities for the safety and convenience of the public. Providing maintenance, repairs, and duties related to Public Works infrastructure. Provides a variety of construction, maintenance, repair and installation of water and wastewater lines, water meter installation, water meter removal, turning off and on of water services, maintenance of manholes and cleanouts, perform small engine repair, fire hydrant and valve basic repairs. Effectively use various electronic devices/equipment including computers and instrumentation. Receives direct supervision from the Public Works Manager. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and general public; maintain a courteous and professional demeanor when situations of conflict arise. Perform related and other job duties as assigned. Responsible for conducting general maintenance functions for public works and utility operations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Assists in litter removal on City Streets, Beach Repair and Install Street Signs. Assist in grounds maintenance. Building retaining walls, maintaining fences, Assist in Meter Reading Operations, including readings, meter locates, meter usage audits, meters, installs and wastewater locates. Ability to work with/operate necessary materials, tools, and light, medium or heavy-duty equipment required to maintain city infrastructures. Clean all drainage infrastructure of debris. Daily perform equipment and vehicles maintenance and pre/post trip inspections before operation. Construction projects and paving preparation, road base and/or base prep and grading Maintaining roads in good condition for safe, hazard-free driving. Performs work assignments, while conforming to all city and departmental regulations and safety requirements while operating equipment and performing work. Provide and install traffic control devices/set-up for construction activities. Safely Operates light, medium, and heavy machinery and equipment. Supports the divisional operations with regular and timely attendance. Will be required to respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day, seven days a week, should they arise. Discusses daily plans, priorities, and work schedules with Public Works Manager, including the most useful equipment for certain jobs. Participate in the on-call rotation for after hours, weekend, or holiday emergencies. Hurricane preparedness Wear appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and always utilize safety equipment. Perform all tasks assigned Requirements Operates a variety of construction and maintenance equipment. May be required to work long hours which include early mornings and/or late evenings. The employee is subject to being on call. Integral part of EOC Performs all job duties assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Highschool diploma or GED equivalent; or any combination training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is a qualifying equivalent.
Licenses or Certifications:
A valid state C driver's license is required. Obtain Certification to assist/run mosquito fogger within one year.
Preferred:
Class "D" Water Distribution or obtain within one year of employment. Class "I" Wastewater Collections or obtain within one-year employment.
Qualified Flagger Training Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in Public Works to include Water Distribution, Wastewater Collections, various facilities maintenance needs, street sign installation and repairs, streets, and drainage repair. Knowledge of pipe installation, connection, and repair. Knowledge of road construction and maintenance. Skill in operation of the listed tools and equipment. Ability to operate and maintain various equipment. Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, other departments, and the public. Skill in the use of a personal computer and software programs such as but not limited to Microsoft Outlook. Perform all tasks assigned. Ability to clear a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screen.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Utility truck, backhoe, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, jackhammer, compressors, sanders, generators, trencher, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches. Skill in use of detection devices, mobile radio, personal computers including word processing and other software, copy and fax machine.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to one hundred (100) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

$40,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year
