Performs semi-skilled, skilled, technical, and administrative work in maintaining the vehicles and mechanical equipment of the City of Killeen.SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Employee has no supervisory responsibilities.CORE COMPETENCIES
Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools. Ability to safely operate a Forklift and/or other lifting devices. Performs diagnostic, preventive maintenance and repair on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment. to include tune-ups, overhauling engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, brakes, drive trains, generators, computer-controlled fuel injection and emission related equipment, carburetors, air conditioning, electrical, cooling, suspension, pumps, hydraulic systems, and steering. Responsible for scheduled and unscheduled repairs and ensuring compliance with all industry standards. Handle new vehicle check-ins, maintain shop equipment, and ensure a safe and clean work environment. Proficient in metal fabrication and related work. Operates automotive and general shop equipment to include brake lathes, gas and arc welding equipment, engine analyzers, tire equipment, scanners, and computers; complies with and helps enforce shop safety rules. Provides road call assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate. Enters work order updates and progress in a computer-based maintenance program; records of maintenance and repair work, including parts used and hours worked. Maintains the security of issued city owned equipment. (e.g., tools, toolbox, safety equipment) Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a team. Participates in on-call program for emergency callback, evenings, and weekends. Performs installation and removal of auxiliary equipment. Transport fleet vehicles safely to designated sites for repairs/warranty/recalls. Performs other duties as assigned.REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
1. High school diploma or equivalent; and 2. One (1) year of specialized training from an accredited institute; or 3. Three (3) years related experience.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
1. Considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, , generators, and welding. 2. Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities. 3. Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools used in modern equipment maintenance. 4. Proficient in comprehending, interpreting, and working from schematics, manuals, sketches, and diagrams. 5. Knowledge of fluids and components used in the repair and servicing of vehicles and equipment. 6. Skill in performing physically demanding tasks using hand and tools and equipment. 7. Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion. 8. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. 9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors, and the public. 10. Maintains regular and punctual attendance.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Must have a valid driver's license by date of hire. 2. Texas State CDL License preferred but not required by date of hire. 3. Must obtain an air conditioning certification, state Motor Vehicle Inspector's (MVI) certification and Texas State CDL License within one (1) year, funded by the City. 4. Upon completion of the six (6) month probationary period, employee will be required to be "on-call" for after-hours emergencies approximately one week per quarter. 5. Certification in vehicle maintenance preferred.TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Motorized vehicles, power and hand tools, and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles such as electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment, computer analyzer, alignment machine, AC machine, tire balancer, brake lathe, welder, cutting equipment, personal computer with fleet maintenance and other related software including word processing, (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.); 10-key calculator; telephone, copy machine, fax machine, and other occupation-related business equipment as needed; and safety equipment as required.PHYSICAL DEMANDS
