Job Description

The Town is seeking an experienced equipment operator to perform skilled work operating motorized equipment in our Water & Sewer Maintenance division. This person would operate trucks and equipment in the construction, repair and maintenance of streets, utility lines, storm drainage and related facilities and systems. The Town offers a competitive salary based on experience, certifications, and job performance. Extended hours are often required for emergency response, to include nights, weekends and holidays.

Tuition Assistance Schedule:
Monday through Friday 7:00am to 3:00pm Rotating On-Call Shifts All new employees must satisfactorily complete a background check. A conditional offer of employment may then be made contingent upon the successful completion of a physical exam that includes alcohol and drug testing. Operate trucks and equipment in the construction, repair, and maintenance of streets, utility lines, storm drainage and related facilities and systems. Operate equipment as a member of a crew involved in water and sewer line, street and drainage installation, maintenance and repair work; helps repair curbs, gutters and sidewalks. Operate front-end loader, back-hoe, bush hog, cat loader, rodding machine and other medium to heavy equipment in the performance of installation, construction, maintenance, and repair tasks. Act as the lead worker directing the activities of employees in lower grades. Supervise and train employees in lower grades. Clean equipment as necessary. Assist with asphalt repair following water and sewer line construction maintenance and repair projects. Perform grease trap inspections, backflow inspections, and fire hydrant flushing. Unclog sewer lines and apply chemicals, as needed. Repair and/or install water meters. Occasionally service and perform minor repairs on heavy equipment. Perform general labor tasks. Assist in snow and ice removal. Work extended hours, nights, weekends and holidays in all types of weather conditions. Ability to be on-call, 24 hours a day, for a 7-day duration on call rotation. Perform related tasks as required.
Requirements Education :
High School Diploma or GED Experience :
Five (5) years of experience in the operation of motorized equipment Valid Virginia Driver's License Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A with Air Brakes and Tanker endorsement Qualifications Knowledge of principles and practices of operating and servicing heavy trucks and related light construction equipment Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations Safe driving practices Knowledge of occupational hazards of the work and safety precautions used by the department Skilled operation of heavy trucks and equipment. Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner both orally and in writing. Ability to prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner. Organization and multi-tasking skills. Ability to make minor repairs on the equipment. Ability to follow directions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the Public. Work Environment Work is performed outdoors. The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions to include extreme cold, extreme heat, hazards and atmospheric conditions. Worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized protective equipment. Physical Demands This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus. Visual acuity is required for operation of machinery and motor vehicles and to determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work.
