Job Description
Job Title:
Distribution Technician Job Description The Distribution Technician performs field-based inspections and surveys of overhead and underground electrical distribution facilities and equipment, collecting detailed data and supporting maintenance and design activities. This role is 100% field-focused and involves extensive daily travel within a multi-hour radius of Syracuse, working in all weather conditions to document distribution poles and related infrastructure. The position offers the opportunity to develop toward a future design role while contributing directly to the reliability and safety of electrical and telecommunications distribution systems. Responsibilities Perform thorough visual inspections of overhead and underground electrical distribution facilities and equipment. Conduct detailed field surveys of distribution poles, targeting approximately 75 poles per day depending on terrain and site conditions. Collect accurate field data, including measurements, site conditions, and photographic documentation of distribution poles and related assets. Prepare minor work orders based on field findings and support the development of maintenance and construction activities. Compile clear and organized maintenance and inspection reports using collected field data. Assist with storm damage assessments for both overhead and underground distribution structures, documenting conditions and required repairs. Upload field data, photos, and documentation into designated systems in a timely and accurate manner. Operate field equipment and tools safely and effectively while performing surveys and inspections. Drive daily to various job sites within a multi-hour radius of Syracuse, including locations such as Buffalo, Massena, and Binghamton, with some overnight travel as needed. Work independently in the field with minimal supervision once trained, managing time and workload to meet daily productivity expectations. Collaborate with office-based team members to ensure field data supports design, broadband, and OSP (outside plant) projects. Communicate effectively with supervisors, teammates, and external stakeholders regarding project status, site conditions, and any issues encountered. Support telecom-related work such as 3rd Party Make Ready activities and broadband or OSP design efforts by providing accurate field information. Maintain a high level of trustworthiness and accountability while working alone in the field and representing the company at customer and public sites. Adapt to changing schedules, weather conditions, and site priorities while consistently delivering high-quality, complete field surveys. Essential Skills Strong verbal and written communication skills to document findings and collaborate with team members and stakeholders. Proven ability to work independently in the field and as part of a collaborative team in the office. Comfort with extensive fieldwork, including walking, standing, and working outdoors for long periods in rain, snow, and sun. Ability to drive daily to job sites within a roughly 3+ hour radius of Syracuse, with flexibility for some overnight travel. High level of attention to detail and accuracy when surveying distribution poles and collecting field data. Experience with field work such as surveying, equipment operation, construction, or similar hands-on roles. Capability to collect, organize, and upload data and photographs from field surveys using digital tools. Trustworthiness and self-motivation to produce consistent results with minimal management oversight once trained. Familiarity with power distribution concepts and utility locating is highly beneficial. Experience or exposure to surveying, blueprint reading, AutoCAD, and power distribution environments. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with 3rd Party Make Ready work in a telecommunications context. Associate degree in Electrical Power Technology or a similar engineering-related discipline preferred. Experience in broadband design or OSP (outside plant) design is highly valued. Experience with the National Joint Utilities Notification System (NJUNS) is preferred but not required. Ability and willingness to grow from a field-focused technician role into a design-oriented position over time. Comfort working with technical documentation, drawings, and design standards. Previous utility locating, telecom, or distribution design experience is a plus. Work Environment This role is 100% field-based and requires working outdoors every day in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, and sun. The Distribution Technician travels daily from the Syracuse area to job sites that may be up to approximately three or more hours away, commonly including regions such as Buffalo, Massena, and Binghamton. A company vehicle is provided for travel to and from job sites. When assignments are more than two hours from Syracuse, hotel accommodations are provided at no cost, and a daily food allowance is available. Drive time is paid, and technicians may choose to return home instead of staying overnight when feasible. The culture emphasizes trust, autonomy, and non-micromanagement, allowing field staff to manage their work independently once trained while still being supported by an office-based design team. The environment is fast-paced and results-oriented, with a strong focus on safety, accurate data collection, and collaboration between field and design personnel.
