Job Title:
Field Technician Job Description The Power Distribution Field Technician plays a crucial role in supporting electric utility distribution projects by conducting field surveys and collecting essential infrastructure data. This field-based position requires daily travel to job sites to inspect overhead and underground electric facilities. The technician is responsible for documenting existing conditions such as pole data, equipment attachments, clearances, measurements, GPS locations, and photographs. All collected information is meticulously organized and uploaded into project systems to aid accurate and efficient utility design and permitting efforts. This role operates under the guidance of project managers, designers, and engineers, ensuring that designs are grounded in real-world field conditions. Responsibilities Conduct on-site inspections of overhead and underground electric distribution facilities, capturing accurate measurements and observations. Document pole information, attachment heights, offsets, equipment types, and nearby obstructions using structured field notes and sketches. Identify aerial and underground assets and collect data for engineering design and permitting. Record utility pole class, height, birthmarks, and existing attachments accurately. Collect GPS locations, photographs, and digital records using smart devices, GPS units, and field equipment. Organize photos, notes, sketches, and measurements into proper folders and systems with daily status reporting. Perform field safety briefings and work safely around energized equipment, traffic, and construction environments. Essential Skills Proficiency in GPS data collection and field documentation. Basic understanding of electric distribution systems including poles, conductors, attachments, and associated equipment. Knowledge of overhead and underground utilities for data collection purposes. Ability to use GPS and technology for data collection and field documentation. Safety compliance knowledge including NESC, NEC, Utility Standards, GIS, Gas Utility, and Telecommunications. Additional Skills & Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Willingness to travel locally up to 100% of the time. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Experience with electric power distribution systems is a plus Familiarity with utility infrastructure or construction environments. Knowledge of NESC and/or NEC standards is a plus Experience reading construction or utility drawings. Work Environment This role is primarily field-based, involving daily site visits not exceeding 2 hours from Richmond, VA. It requires outdoor work in all weather conditions and daily driving of a company vehicle to job sites. The technician will gain hands-on field experience supporting large-scale electric distribution projects and exposure to design, engineering, and utility construction workflows. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Richmond, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $50000.00 - $60000.00/yr.
