Job Description
Becoming a Road Maintenance Worker would allow you to be involved with staff within local government, ranging from municipalities and townships to other government agencies. Your day will consist of a variety of maintenance and traffic tasks related to the preservation and upkeep of County highways, bridges, drainage structures, other highway features, and DOT facilities. This position performs semi-skilled work in operating tools and highway maintenance equipment. In addition, this position performs essential snow and ice control operations and will be on a 24 hour on-call status. The regular work hours are Monday through Friday, 6:30 am until 3:00 pm. Depending on the assignment, the incumbent may perform a combination of some or all the following duties, and perform related duties as assigned, this list of duties is not intended to be all-inclusive: Operate a variety of highway maintenance equipment such as trucks, pavement marking equipment, snowplow trucks with plows and salt spreaders, tractors, mowers, chippers, compressors, jack hammers, generators, etc. Wash, grease, and assist in maintenance/servicing equipment including minor repairs and preventive maintenance. Repair, replace, and patch asphalt and concrete surfaces and fill in aggregate shoulder ruts. Load and spread salt and deicing materials; plow and remove snow. Direct and control traffic during road maintenance. Remove and dispose of trash, dead animals, and other debris found on highways. Repair and clean culverts, drains, storm sewers, ditches and other drainage facilities. Trim and chip trees and shrubs. Work from ladders or scaffolding. Perform difficult physical labor and work under extreme weather conditions. All duties are performed in accordance with the County safety code and established safe work practices. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Completion of a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) equivalent Must possess a Class B Driver's License (CDL) with air brakes Class A preferred Requires a satisfactory driving recordPHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE POSITION
The ability to perform difficult physical labor and to regularly lift and/or carry objects weighing 25 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds is required. The position is exposed to extreme heat and/or cold; wet or humid conditions; extreme noise levels; animals/wildlife; vibration; fumes and/or noxious odors; traffic; moving machinery; electrical shock; heights and other extreme hazards.
