With a strong presence in the Mid-Atlantic region, we are committed to maintaining the highest levels of work zone safety on every project, from local roadways to major state and federal highway corridors. Position Summary We are seeking reliable, safety-focused Traffic Control Flaggers who hold or are willing to obtain their Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) Flagger Certification . This position is responsible for protecting the public, crew members, and equipment by safely directing traffic through active construction and utility work zones across Maryland roadways. Key Responsibilities Direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic through work zones on Maryland state, county, and local roadways in accordance withMDOT SHA
standards and the MUTCD Set up, maintain, and remove TCP (Traffic Control Plan) devices including cones, drums, barricades, arrow boards, and regulatory signage per approved plans Operate two-way radios to coordinate with fellow flaggers, crew supervisors, and when required, local law enforcement Ensure compliance with COMAR (Code of Maryland Regulations) and all applicable SHA work zone safety requirements Monitor changing traffic and site conditions and immediately report hazards to the supervisor Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with the motoring public Assist with traffic control setup and breakdown as directed by the Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) Complete and maintain accurate daily logs, flagger activity reports, and incident documentation as required by SHA project specifications Adhere strictly to the project-specific Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) Plan on all SHA and locally administered projects Maryland-Specific Requirements Must hold a validMDOT SHA
Flagger Certification issued through an approved Maryland training provider — or be willing to obtain certification before first field assignment SHA Flagger Certification must be current and not expired (renewed every 4 years per MDOT requirements) Familiarity with Maryland MUTCD standards and SHA Work Zone Safety guidelines strongly preferred Must comply with all Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) regulations applicable to highway work zones Projects on State Highway Administration (SHA) maintained roadways may require additional SHA project-specific orientation or badging Some projects may require coordination with the Maryland State Police (MSP) or local law enforcement — professional conduct is mandatory at all times General Requirements Must be 18 years of age or older Valid Maryland driver's license preferred Ability to stand for extended periods (8-12 hours) in all weather conditions Strong situational awareness, calm under pressure, and excellent communication skills Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical setup of traffic control equipment Punctual, dependable, and safety-first mindset Ability to read and interpret basic TCP plan layouts Preferred Qualifications Prior flagger or traffic control experience onMDOT SHA
projects Experience working in utility, natural gas, electric, or road construction in Maryland Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) certification — a plus for those seeking advancement Familiarity with SHA's Work Zone Safety and Mobility policy First Aid / CPR certification Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus Working Conditions Outdoor work in all Maryland weather conditions including heat, humidity, cold, and rain Extended periods of standing on active roadways and uneven terrain Direct exposure to moving vehicle traffic and heavy construction equipment Early morning starts; overtime, weekend, and emergency callout work may be required Some projects may require travel to various Maryland counties Opportunities may exist to support projects in neighboring states for qualified candidatesCompensation & Benefits Pay Rate:
