Job Description
Under direct supervision, assists in maintaining county roads and their right of way by performing a variety of manual tasks. Work assignments will vary depending upon the season and projects assigned.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
The Road Maintenance Worker is the entry or trainee level class for incumbents. Employees in this classification often work as part of a crew, are under direct supervision, and are gaining the skills needed to operate equipment and perform road maintenance responsibilities. The Road Maintenance Worker II incumbents perform road construction work and operate equipment independently under general supervision. The Lead Road Maintenance Worker provides directions to a crew(s) and acts as a job or project leader for staff and independently operates a variety of equipment.Supervision Exercised and Received:
Under Immediate Supervision - Incumbents at this level are closely supervised in essentially all aspects of their assigned work except for routine and basic tasks. Work methods are generally prescribed in specific terms. They usually follow an established routine with general assignments, and their work is subject to frequent reviews. A position may involve repetition of a limited number of tasks that after initial training and review warrant only occasional supervisory re-review. This type of direction is normally reserved for entry and trainee level positions. Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. Assigned job tasks/duties are not limited to the essential functions. Repairs and patches surfaces by hand sweeping, raking and shoveling; loads and unloads gravel, chips, and asphalt. Fabricates and prepares cement forms; cuts, repairs or removes broken or damaged sidewalks, curbs and gutters. Installs and maintains traffic control devices; paints traffic lines; erects, repairs and removes signs. Performs regular storm drain maintenance and emergency storm work. Spray and remove weeds and old vegetation from around places such as roadways, buildings, ditches, ponds, fences and sidewalks. Performs emergency storm/disaster work. Operates light duty snowplow for snow removal. Transports and operates striping equipment. Operates light equipment on routine assignments including, but not limited to asphalt rollers, sweepers, mowers and concrete/asphalt saws. Performs daily preventative maintenance such as greasing and checking fluids. Drives a variety of light duty trucks. Operates and maintains a variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to activities. Subject to emergency call-out response and standby assignment. Observes safe work methods and uses safety equipment; secures worksites from safety hazards as necessary; attends safety meetings. Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Basic computer operation. Road construction materials, tools and equipment. Methods employed in basic laboring and maintenance work. Safety precautions that are used in hazardous construction work.Skill to:
Use tools, equipment, and supplies in a safe and efficient manner. Measure and calculate angles, lengths, and volumes. Complete and maintain accurate records.Ability to:
Effectively organize and manage time. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Follow instructions from supervisors or senior maintenance workers. Contribute effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives, and activities. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervision and those encountered in the course of the workRequired Certifications and Licenses:
Possession of a valid driver's license. OSHA 10-Hour Construction Training certification within 15 days of the date of employment in accordance withNRS 618.983
