Job Description
Job Title:
Flagger Job Description This position involves working full-time outdoors to support roadway construction and maintenance projects by safely directing and controlling traffic around active work zones. You will complete a required online training course before attending a paid in-person orientation, then be dispatched from your home each workday to job sites typically within about one hour of the shop, primarily in the Cleveland area. The role requires long periods on your feet in all weather conditions and close adherence to safety protocols to protect workers, drivers, and pedestrians. Responsibilities Direct and control traffic using stop/slow paddles, hand signals, and radios to maintain safe and orderly movement through work zones. Set up, maintain, and remove traffic control devices such as cones, signs, and barricades in accordance with company and state standards. Monitor road and worksite conditions continuously and adjust traffic control patterns as needed to ensure safety for crews and the public. Communicate clearly and consistently with crew members, supervisors, and the public to coordinate safe operations around work areas. Follow all safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment, and immediately report hazards, incidents, or equipment issues. Remain attentive and alert throughout the shift, standing for extended periods regardless of weather conditions. Complete a 3-4 hour online traffic control training course prior to orientation, using the provided instructions and platform. Attend in-person orientation to review safety procedures, learn company standards, and receive required personal protective equipment. Travel daily from home to assigned work sites within approximately a one-hour radius of the shop as dispatched via the company app. Work cooperatively with construction and utility crews on active job sites to support safe and efficient project operations. Essential Skills Ability to stand on your feet for the entire shift and work outdoors in all weather conditions. Ability to lift approximately 30-50 pounds as needed to handle traffic control equipment. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to travel to various job sites. Strong situational awareness to monitor traffic, workers, and surroundings in dynamic environments. Clear verbal communication skills to interact with crew members, supervisors, and the public. Ability to remain calm, professional, and courteous when dealing with the public in potentially stressful situations. Willingness to complete a 3-4 hour traffic control training course before orientation. Traffic control or flagging certification (or willingness to obtain one). Comfort working 8-10 hour days, Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturdays. Ability to use a smartphone and basic apps to complete training and receive daily dispatch information. Additional Skills & Qualifications Prior flagging, traffic control, or construction experience is a plus. Experience in landscaping or other outdoor labor is beneficial for adapting to the physical demands of the role. ATSSA traffic control certification is highly valued and may allow you to bypass the standard 3-4 hour training course. Familiarity with traffic management principles and safe work practices around roadways. Comfort working around construction equipment and utility work zones. Why Work Here? You join a safety-focused organization that invests in your training and provides the equipment you need to succeed. Flagging certification training is offered at no cost, and orientation time is paid while you learn safety protocols and job expectations. You receive personal protective equipment, and once hired on and promoted within the company, you may be eligible for a company vehicle. The benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, short-term disability coverage, life and accident insurance options, and paid time off, supporting your well-being on and off the job. Work Environment You work 100% outdoors on active construction and utility job sites, primarily within about a one-hour radius of the shop and largely in the Cleveland area. Shifts typically run 8-10 hours per day, Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturday work based on project needs. You will be dispatched from home each day through a mobile app and will spend most of your time on your feet directing traffic and managing traffic control devices in varying weather conditions. Orientation takes place in an office setting, where breakfast and lunch are provided and safety procedures are reviewed.
