NEWPORT NEWS, VA GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Under general supervision, this position is responsible for performing specialized work while operating a variety of•heavy equipment. Serves as a lead worker. Reports to a Crew Supervisor C or Utility Crew Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Operates equipment such as a backhoe, large and small excavator, milling machine, front end loader and bulldozer to install, repair and perform maintenance on the water distribution system. Performs a variety of heavy manual labor utilizing jackhammers, pipe saw, concrete saw, portable air compressor, portable light plant, and portable arrow board; maintains the material inventory on the line truck. Operates a tandem dump truck and trailer as well as a road tractor and lowboy to transport equipment, materials and supplies. Assists with all aspects of water distribution system installation, maintenance, ad repair. Ensures the safety of City equipment, private property, and others by following proper safety procedures, watching for overhead utility lines, and checking for traffic and underground utilities; sets out traffic cones and signs according the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD); flags traffic as needed. Performs routine checks and preventive maintenance on equipment; identifies and reports equipment malfunctions; cleans equipment as needed. Responsible for training others in various aspects of water distribution system installation, maintenance, and repair. Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Requires 5-7 years of work experience in the operation of Class A or B equipment and 1-2 years' experience as a lead worker or supervisor, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Graduation from a recognized motor equipment operator apprenticeship program may substitute for up to one year of experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
An acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check, and a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record. Must obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) permit prior to employment and complete the practical portion of the CDL test within 60 days of employment. Position requires satisfactory results from a medical and audio evaluation and pre-employment substance abuse testing and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing. Requires Flagging Certification within 6 months of employment. The job is considered Essential Personnel and will be required to work during and following natural disasters and emergency situations and requires the ability to work on a rotating standby schedule.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURES
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, weather, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, toxic agents, animals/wildlife, water hazards, disease, or pathogenic substances.
