JOB SUMMARY
This position is primarily responsible for the installation, maintenance, alteration, and repair of overhead electrical lines, underground cables, electrical substations, and related electrical distribution equipment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Assists with training new personnel.
  • Connects new electrical services for residential and business customers cuts off services as directed.
  • Constructs and maintains overhead electrical distribution lines; repairs sagging wires and trims or removes tree limbs from electrical system rights-of-way and overhead lines; climbs power line poles to perform work requirements.
  • Installs and maintains low-voltage electrical systems.
  • Installs and maintains underground electrical cables, pipes, and transformers; assists with electrical lines and equipment locates.
  • Installs meters.
  • Installs transformers and switches to provide commercial and residential electrical services, including temporary services.
  • Installs, constructs, maintains, alters, and repairs overhead electrical lines, underground cables, transformers, substations, and other related electrical distribution equipment.
  • Maintain courteous relations with public.
  • Maintains and cleans department vehicles and equipment.
  • Orders materials and supplies and coordinate field work in the absence of the Electrical Distribution Supervisor.
  • Operates a line truck, bucket truck, backhoe, trencher, boring machine, excavator, and wire-pulling rig.
  • Pulls in Fiber Optic cable and splices it.
  • Reads utility service meters.
  • Repairs streetlights.
  • Requests line locates from other utility providers as needed.
  • Responds to electric service and emergency calls. Remains on call to reconnect electrical services as assigned.
  • Responds to trouble calls related to power outages, accidents, fires, and weather conditions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education and Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent and five (5) years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of the standard materials, tools, equipment, methods and terminology used in the operation of a municipal electric distribution system. Knowledge of safety procedures pertaining to electric distribution system maintenance. Knowledge of electrical construction, maintenance, and repair practices and procedures. Skill in using various hand and hydraulic tools. Skill in defensive driving technique. Skill in working with high voltage electrical lines. Skill in climbing utility poles. Skill in operating bucket and lines trucks. Ability to operate heavy and light equipment. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must have sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a field environment. The work consists of continuous outdoor activity, frequent standing, climbing, sitting, walking, squatting, bending, twisting upper body, climbing, exposure to extreme hear, cold, noise, mechanical hazards, fume/odor hazards, toxic waste/material hazards. Must be able to walk occasionally for 6 to 8 hours per day or longer if necessary. Must have no restrictions that impair starting and stopping procedures on vehicles. Must be able to shift either standard or automatic transmission with right hand and arm occasionally for 6 to 8 hours or longer if necessary. Must have no restrictions that impair seat belt use or entering and exiting of equipment and vehicles. Must be able to lift, drag or carry fifty (50) to one hundred (100) pounds. Must have no climbing or height restrictions on an electric pole or other equipment. Must have no impairments that limit work capabilities in year-round weather conditions. Must be able to bend and twist for lifting, installing and reading electric meters and other electric appurtenances. Must have no limitations which restrict climbing. This includes reaching, standing, stooping, bending, twisting and kneeling while performing the needed repairs or installation while on an electric pole or in the bucket truck. Must have no limitations that restrict shoveling of dirt for 6 to 8 hours per day. Must be able to work in confined spaces; walk and work on slippery and uneven surfaces. Requires manual dexterity sufficient to grasp, hold objects and tools with full range of motion in wrists and arms. Must be able to climb ladders, crawl across pipelines, lift or carry 50 pounds while climbing ladder or steep banks. Must be able to lift equipment weighing in excess of 50 pounds several times a day if necessary. Must have close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Must have hearing ability sufficient to understand general in-person and telephone conversation. Must have ability to read a variety of informational, technical documentations, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work will typically be performed in an outdoor setting. While performing the functions of this position, the employee will be exposed to dust, dire, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasional inclement weather. The work requires the use of safety devices such as gloved, line hoses, hot sticks, hard hats, safety harnesses, and eye protectors.
