Job Description

The City of Geneva, Illinois, (a mid-size suburb just over an hour west of Chicago) has several openings for linemen to support our electric utility at Public Works. The starting base pay as of 5/1/26 is equivalent to $136,988 per year, excluding overtime and stand-by pay. If you've thought of pivoting to a municipal utility, this could be a great opportunity for meaningful and stable work. Due to retirements and promotions, we have three (3) current openings. Responsibilities Perform installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems using bucket trucks, cranes, and other specialized equipment. Rigging heavy components safely and efficiently to facilitate line construction or repair activities. Read and interpret blueprints, technical diagrams, and utility locating maps to accurately execute projects. Operate bucket trucks, climbing equipment, and other tools to access high-voltage lines while adhering to strict safety protocols. Conduct field service tasks including troubleshooting electrical issues with ohmmeters and testing equipment for proper system operation. Engage in cabling, conduit installation, and wiring activities for both commercial and industrial electrical systems. Assist with tree trimming around power lines to prevent outages and maintain system integrity while following OSHA standards and NEC guidelines. Requirements Certified Journeyman Lineman who have completed an approved apprenticeship. Representation in IBEW Locals such as 196 and 15 are highly desirable. Proven experience as a Journeyman Lineman or in a similar electrical field with a focus on high voltage systems. Strong knowledge of rigging techniques, bucket operation, climbing procedures, and safety standards such as OSHA regulations. Ability to read blueprints accurately and perform utility locating using modern tools and methods. Valid driver's license with certification for bucket truck operation; CDL required. Physical ability to climb poles, work at heights, lift heavy equipment safely, and perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions.
