The position will perform difficult skilled technical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of the electric utility distribution system and related devices. The position is responsible for responding to emergency and after-hours requests and assisting in the training of apprentice lineman on staff. Job Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to)
  • Performs installation, maintenance, and repair work on low and high-voltage distribution lines.
  • Locates underground lines.
  • Hangs transformers and wires up secondary.
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces cross arms, leg supports, cable insulator, and lightning arrestors.
  • Tests electric meters.
  • Installs and maintains overhead and underground service to new customers.
  • Operates a variety of utility vehicles and equipment including trucks, loaders, backhoe, digger, boom, compressor, test equipment, etc.; digs holes and sets electrical poles.
  • Performs substation maintenance and testing; prepares required reports.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs street lights, traffic signals and other facilities.
  • Constructs and maintains overhead and underground power lines, transformer and capacitor banks, secondary service lines, and street lighting.
  • Participates in current and on-going safety training, maintenance of standards and equipment checks and maintenance.
  • Assists with street maintenance, grounds maintenance, snow removal as needed.
  • Assists with training other workers on the safe operation of tools and equipment.
  • Trims trees and cuts brush to remove line deterrents.
  • Assists with AMI programming and testing. Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid class A commercial driver's license.
  • Journeyman Lineman card.
  • Must live within 30 minutes of city limits.
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Considerate experience in high voltage electrical power and distribution, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements This work requires the regular exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions, frequently requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and occasionally requires sitting and tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather) and exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
