Job Description
GENERAL PURPOSE
To construct, repair, maintain and inspect overhead electrical power distribution lines; and to perform related work as required.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform line maintenance and construction on energized and de-energized lines and services. Installing, connecting, inspecting, or disconnecting substation equipment. Respond to customer call and complaints. Troubleshoot power outages and problems with electrical lines and wires. Be on-call and attend to call-outs, and perform repairs in an efficient and timely manner. Install, inspect, maintain, and make connections to electrical equipment. Operate line trucks and equipment. Perform switching operations. Construct and maintain streetlight, traffic control, and information technology systems. Locate and stake electric lines. Install and replace electrical meters at residential homes and buildings. Install recording equipment. Reading and interpreting electrical diagrams Digging trenches and/or climbing poles to repair or maintain underground and overhead electrical cables. Performing inspections to prevent power outages by replacing or repairing components. Clear away tree branches or other hazards near live power installations. Perform the work of lower classified employees. Use climbing hooks and safety belts to climb utility poles and to perform the associated tasks of this position. Report progress, complications, concerns, and delays to supervisor. Adhere to safety standards at all times, as well as comply with City and industry regulations. Other duties may be assigned to meet business needs, including assisting other departments.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of Lineworker A apprentice program or equivalent.Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Two years of related work experience or equivalent training. Experience with climbing gear, digger derricks, aerial lifts, backhoes, tensioners, pullers, and cranes. Knowledge of federal safety regulations and guidelines, including those outlined by OSHA and MIOSHA. Superb troubleshooting abilities.LICENSING AND CERTIFICATION
Successful completion of an accredited Lineman A apprentice program. Must have a valid State of Michigan driver's license. Must obtain a valid State of Michigan Class A Commercial Driver's License within nine (9) months of hire.TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and smell. Heavy physical effort required; must be able to lift 80 lbs. May be required to lift heavier items with assistance from coworkers or usage of available equipment. Must be able to climb utility poles. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.WORK ENVIRONMENT
The City of South Haven is a drug-free workplace. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to inclement weather conditions. This position also requires the employee to be available for night work. Exposure to overhead line work and high voltage.
