Job Description
Position Summary The Challenge Course Staff Member helps create a safe, engaging, and growth-oriented experience for campers through the facilitation of ropes course, climbing, team-building, and outdoor adventure activities. Staff members are responsible for maintaining physical and emotional safety while helping campers build confidence, resilience, communication skills, and teamwork. Challenge Course Staff are enthusiastic role models who bring energy, responsibility, and positivity to camp life while supporting Camp Judaea's mission and values. Core ResponsibilitiesProgram Facilitation Lead and facilitate ropes course, climbing wall, zip line, low ropes, and team-building activities Teach campers proper use of equipment and challenge course safety procedures Adapt activities to meet the developmental needs and comfort levels of different age groups Create a supportive environment that encourages personal growth, confidence, and teamwork Help campers challenge themselves while respecting individual boundaries Camper Supervision & Engagement Supervise campers at all times during activities Serve as a positive dugma ishit (role model) for campers and fellow staff Build meaningful relationships with campers through encouragement, enthusiasm, and presence Support campers through moments of challenge, fear, frustration, and success Participate fully in broader camp life, including evening programs, special events, and community activities Safety & Risk Management Follow all challenge course safety standards, camp policies, and emergency procedures Conduct daily safety checks of equipment and activity areas Properly fit harnesses, helmets, and other safety gear Maintain accurate equipment storage and organization Immediately communicate any safety concerns, incidents, or equipment issues to supervisors Maintain emotional safety alongside physical safety throughout all programming Team Collaboration Attend staff training, certifications, meetings, and ongoing professional development sessions Work collaboratively with unit heads, counselors, and specialty staff Assist with setup, cleanup, and transitions between activities Support the overall goals and culture of Camp Judaea Qualifications Minimum age required: 18+ Experience working with children, teens, or outdoor education programs preferred Previous ropes course, climbing, belay, or outdoor adventure experience preferred Willingness to obtain required ropes/challenge course certification and training Strong communication and teamwork skills Ability to remain calm, attentive, and safety-focused in active environments Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions Enthusiasm, flexibility, responsibility, and a positive attitude Physical Requirements Ability to stand, walk, climb, and work outdoors for extended periods Ability to lift and carry equipment Comfortable working at heights and facilitating physical activities Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations Camp Judaea Values Challenge Course Staff are expected to model Camp Judaea's community values through kindness, responsibility, honesty, respect, teamwork, and care for others.
