Position Summary:
The HV Transformer Technician is responsible for performing field based work (70% travel) on power transformers and related high-voltage equipment. This role includes full transformer dressout, assembly, testing support, oil processing, vacuum filling, and maintenance activities. The technician ensures all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with industry standards and company procedures. Responsibilities Transformer Assembly & DressOut Perform complete dressout of power transformers, including installation of radiators, bushings, fans, pumps, wiring, conservators, gauges, and auxiliary equipment.
Assemble and torque all bolted connections per OEM specifications.
Install gaskets, seals, and accessory components to ensure leakfree operation.
Execute mechanical and electrical assembly tasks during transformer installation or refurbishment.
Assist with removal/dressdown during transformer decommissioning. Oil Processing & Fluid Management Operate transformer oil processing equipment, including vacuum dehydrators, filtration systems, and degasification units.
Perform vacuum pulls, leak checks, and vacuum hold tests on transformer tanks and components.
Conduct hot oil circulation, fillups, and temperature-controlled oil handling.
Take fluid samples and perform or assist with dielectric, moisture, and DGA testing.
Maintain oil cleanliness standards (e.g., moisture ppm, particulate levels) according to OEM and industry requirements. Testing & Commissioning Support Support field test teams with electrical testing preparation (e.g. Power Factor, IR, TTR, winding resistance, SFRA).
Assist in monitoring transformer parameters during energization and commissioning.
Use instrumentation and hand tools to support diagnostic and maintenance tasks. Safety & Compliance Follow all safety protocols, including lockout/tagout, PPE, and rigging procedures.
Maintain compliance with
OSHA, NFPA
70E, NETA, and company safety standards.
Participate in job hazard analyses, tailgate meetings, and safety audits.
Ensure all documentation, field reports, and work orders are completed accurately. Equipment & Tool Management Maintain oil rigs, pumps, hoses, gauges, and dressout tools in proper working condition.
Perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance on processing and auxiliary equipment.
Assist with mobilization and demobilization of tools, trailers, and field equipment.
Qualifications Required:
6+ years of experience working with power transformers or highvoltage electrical equipment
Knowledge of transformer construction, components, and field service processes
Experience with oil processing equipment (vacuum rigs, filters, pumps)
Ability to read and interpret OEM drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams
Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of electrical safety
Valid driver's license and willingness to travel
CDL and experience operating forklifts/rigging equipment
Preferred:
Experience with transformer testing or utility/substation environments
NETA, OSHA
30, or transformer OEM training certifications
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Comfortable working outdoors at substations, industrial sites, and power plants
Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and stand for extended periods
Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and outoftown assignments as required
