POSITION SUMMARY
The Maintenance Technician is primarily responsible for supporting the overall operation, maintenance, and repair of school facilities. This role works under the direction of the Director of Facilities and in collaboration with skilled tradesmen (electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, and carpenters) to ensure buildings and systems are safe, functional, and well-maintained. As a secondary responsibility, this position performs painting and surface finishing tasks, including preparation, application, and maintenance of interior and exterior surfaces to support the appearance and longevity of school facilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Primary responsibilities- Maintenance Technician Support skilled tradesmen in maintenance and repair of building systems. Perform general maintenance tasks and preventative maintenance. Perform snow removal activities to include snow blowing, shoveling, and applying snow melt. Assist in construction, renovation, and repair projects. Follow established procurement procedures. Respond to work orders and troubleshoot facility issues. Assist with emergency repairs. Maintain tools and workspaces. Follow safety procedures and OSHA standards. Collaborate with facilities and school staff. Report progress to the Director of Facilities. Secondary Responsibilities- Painter Prepare and paint interior and exterior surfaces. Perform surface preparation (cleaning, sanding, patching, priming). Apply paints, stains, and coatings. Complete touch-ups and minor repairs. Ensure quality and safety standards. Maintain painting supplies. Dispose of all paints, stains, and coatings in accordance with state and federal regulations.

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of various building maintenance practices and painting techniques. Working knowledge of building trades including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and painting. Knowledge of surface preparation, including sanding, priming, and patching to ensure proper paint adhesion and finish. Knowledge of sanitation and disinfection procedures to maintain clean workspaces and prevent contamination. Knowledge of safety procedures and OSHA standards, including handling and disposal of hazardous materials (SDS) such as paints, solvents, and cleaning agents. Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisors and collaborate with the school principal and other staff members to plan and coordinate maintenance tasks and painting projects. Skilled in efficiently prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines and minimize disruption to school activities. Ability to read, write, and speak (by self or through technological assistance) English fluently for communication and documentation purposes. Ability to describe orally or in writing painting, maintenance, or repair needs to supervisors or staff members as required. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and others contacted in the course of work. Ability to perform basic mathematical operations, such as calculating area to estimate material quantities. Ability to work in poor weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, or snow. Ability to work at heights on ladders or scaffolding to reach high surfaces. Ability to perform work according to standard procedures, schedules, and quality expectations set forth by supervisors. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team when necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE
Any combination of education and experience providing the necessary skills for effective performance in this role.
Typical qualifications include:
High School Diploma or equivalent. Completion of a vocational training program in construction, painting, or a related field is preferred. Previous experience in painting, general labor, and building trades is desirable. Valid motor vehicle operator's license with a clean driving record.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS, WORK HAZARDS
Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above, in addition to the following: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee is regularly required to see, talk, and hear. The employee is regularly required to use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Employee must occasionally move equipment and/or supplies. The job is performed for the most part in an office or school setting with regular exposure to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; and risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat and vibration. The noise level is that of a typical school, but can be loud depending on the situation. Mental demands requiring decision making, analytical and organizational skills in order to achieve work objectives, draw daily operational conclusions, solve practical problems, use computer technology and to present information for use by administration in making decisions.
