Job Description

Position Summary We are seeking a Pilot Plant Operator to support research and development activities in a pilot-scale processing facility. This role involves hands-on operation of chemical equipment, safe handling of materials, sample collection, equipment maintenance, and general labor duties to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the plant. The ideal candidate will be safety-focused, detail-oriented, and able to thrive in a physically demanding, team-based environment. Safety Requirements The Chemical Pilot Plant Operator is expected to uphold the highest standards of safety and regulatory compliance, including: Complying with all OSHA standards as outlined in the Code of Federal Regulations. Following company safety policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Correcting or reporting safety hazards immediately. Stopping work if conditions are unsafe or cannot be performed safely. Participating in daily safety discussions and safety meetings. Maintaining work areas using 5-S standards (sort, set in order, shine, standardize, sustain). Reporting to work on time, fit for duty, and ready to work. Reporting all accidents and near misses, regardless of severity. Proper use of required personal protective equipment (PPE), including steel-toe boots/shoes, lab coat, safety glasses, gloves, respirator, hearing protection, and harness when necessary. - Essential Duties and Responsibilities Report directly to the Pilot Plant Supervisor or R&D Manager. Collect and label process samples as required by R&D protocols. Perform routine cleanup, including sweeping, mopping, wiping surfaces, and removing trash or debris. Lift and move items weighing up to 50 lbs. Safely use ladders and fall protection equipment (harnesses) when climbing. Perform painting and maintenance tasks (e.g., handrails, floors, and building surfaces). Assist operators, engineers, and crew members with tasks as directed. Operate pilot plant equipment in accordance with SOPs and training. Use basic computer systems to log data, track tasks, or support reporting needs. Operate forklifts when necessary (forklift certification preferred; training provided if needed). Work 12-hour shifts in a physically active role, including extended standing and walking. Once trained, safely handle, transfer, and work with chemicals and process streams. Perform additional duties as assigned to support plant operations and research activities. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certificate or associate degree in chemical processing, industrial technology, or related field preferred. Prior experience in chemical, industrial, or pilot plant operations preferred. Ability to work in physically demanding conditions, including lifting, climbing, and long periods of standing. Strong commitment to safety and compliance. Basic computer literacy (data entry, email, and plant monitoring systems). Forklift certification preferred (training will be provided if not already certified). Willingness to work 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, or holidays as scheduled. - Key Competencies Safety-minded with strong hazard awareness. Reliable, punctual, and able to work as part of a team. Detail-oriented and able to follow written and verbal instructions. Strong communication skills to support shift handovers and reporting. Adaptability and willingness to learn new equipment and processes.
