We are a team of artists, fabricators, designers, and craftspeople who create one-of-a-kind public art, museum exhibits, architectural elements, and custom fabrication projects. The CNC department supports all of Gizmo's fabrication shops and also provides CNC machining services for outside clients. This position plays a critical role in transforming digital designs into precision-cut components used in exhibits, sculptures, public art installations, and architectural projects. About Gizmo Since 1996, Gizmo Art Production has provided design, prototyping, fabrication, and installation services to artists, museums, corporations, educational institutions, and collectors throughout the Bay Area, across the United States, and internationally. We help artists, design firms, museums, and companies bring ambitious ideas to life through design, engineering, fabrication, and installation. Position Summary The CNC Operator is responsible for programming, setup, operation, maintenance, and quality control of CNC equipment used to produce custom-fabricated parts. The ideal candidate combines strong technical skills with excellent problem-solving abilities and the flexibility to work across a wide variety of materials and project types. Responsibilities Program, set up, and operate CNC equipment including: 3-axis CNC router 5-axis CNC router Fiber laser CNC plasma cutter Waterjet Create and modify toolpaths using CAD/CAM software. Review shop drawings, digital models, and nested parts files for accuracy and manufacturability. Collaborate with project managers, designers, engineers, and fabrication teams to determine machining requirements and schedules. Perform machine setup, calibration, troubleshooting, and operation. Conduct quality control inspections to ensure parts meet project specifications. Maintain inventory of tooling, consumables, and PPE. Coordinate material handling and operate forklifts to load and unload materials. Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on CNC equipment. Receive, inspect, and organize incoming materials. Assist with facility maintenance and support equipment upkeep. Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment. Contribute to a positive, collaborative team culture. Qualifications Minimum 2 years of CNC programming and machine operation experience. Experience operating one or more of the following: Waterjet systems (Omax preferred) Fiber lasers (HypCut/CypCut preferred) CNC plasma cutters (Torchmate preferred) CNC routers, including 5-axis systems Experience with CAD/CAM software, preferably Rhino and Fusion 360. Ability to read and interpret shop drawings, fabrication drawings, and CAD models. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Experience working with wood, plastics, composites, aluminum, steel, and other fabrication materials. Forklift experience preferred. Comfortable using a wide range of hand and power tools. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet production deadlines. Professional communication and teamwork skills. Customer-focused and solution-oriented mindset. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Preferred Qualifications Experience with 5-axis machining. Experience in exhibit fabrication, architectural fabrication, public art fabrication, sign fabrication, or custom manufacturing. Experience creating nested cutting files and optimizing material utilization. Familiarity with fabrication shop workflows and project-based manufacturing environments. We are looking for candidates who already live in the SF Bay Area. Schedule Full-time Monday-Friday 7 am - 3:30 pm Compensation Compensation dependent on experience and qualifications.
