CAD/CAM Engineer Major Tool & Machine United States, Indiana, Indianapolis 1458 East 19th Street (Show on map) May 29, 2026
Position Title:
CAD/CAM PROGRAMMER
Position Summary:
Functions individually to plan numerical control programs to control contour-path machining of metal parts on automatic machine tools.

Manufacturing Support Services Manager or Operations Group Leader Personnel:

Duties:
Analyze drawing, sketches, and design data of part to determine dimension and configuration of cuts, selection of cutting tools, and machine speeds and feed rates, according to knowledge of machine shop processes, part specification, and machine capabilities. Exercise discretion and judgment to produce the most efficient tool path to machine the part. Determine reference points and direction machine cutting paths. Compute angular and linear dimensions, radii, and curvatures, and outline sequence of operations required to machine part. Prepare geometric layout on graph paper or using computer-assisted drafting software to show location of reference points and direction of cutting paths, using drafting instruments or computer. Write setup sheets and tool sheets to guide setup and operation of machine. Write program of machine instructions in symbolic language to encode numerical control tape or direct numerical control data base to regulate movement of machine along cutting path. Compare encoded tape or computer printout with original program sheet to assure accuracy of machine instructions. Check program through visual playback software. Revise program to eliminate instruction errors or omissions. Observe operation of machine on trial run to prove taped or programmed instructions. Communicate with co-workers, supervisor, and tool engineer to receive instructions and coordinate activities.

Educational Experience
  • Requires knowledge of an advance type in a field of science or learning customarily acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction and study. Experience
  • Requires theoretical and practical application of highly-specialized knowledge in computer systems analysis, programming, and software engineering. Physical Demands
  • The employee is required to: stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to floor exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or exert up to 10 pounds of force frequently. Certification Required

  • Normally works in an office environment may cccasionally be subject to: shop floor environment high noise levels from operating machines physical hazards from moving equipment and production components breathing fumes, dust and mist skin exposure to oils and cutting fluids.
