Job Title:
High-Level CNC Programmer — Metal Machining Job Description This senior-level CNC Programmer role focuses on precision metal machining, complex part geometry, and advanced CAM strategies. You will own the programming process from print to finished part, acting as the primary technical authority for CNC programming, tooling strategy, and machining process optimization. The position is ideal for someone who enjoys solving challenging machining problems, improving shop performance, and mentoring others while ensuring top-tier quality and repeatability. Responsibilities Create, optimize, and validate CNC programs for multi-axis mills and lathes using advanced CAM software such as Mastercam, Fusion, or similar platforms. Design efficient machining workflows, including tool selection and optimal feeds and speeds for a range of metals such as aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, and tool steels. Read and interpret complex engineering prints, including GD&T, tight tolerances, and surface finish requirements, to ensure parts meet specifications. Collaborate closely with machinists to optimize setups, reduce setup time, improve repeatability, and streamline production processes. Lead continuous improvement initiatives aimed at reducing cycle times, minimizing scrap, and enhancing overall machining efficiency. Partner with quality control teams to ensure programs consistently meet dimensional, tolerance, and surface finish requirements. Troubleshoot machining issues on the floor, adjusting programs, tooling, and processes to resolve problems and improve outcomes. Mentor and support machinists and junior programmers by sharing best practices in programming, tooling, and machining strategies. Contribute to tooling and workholding strategy, including recommending or validating fixtures and workholding methods for complex parts. Collaborate with engineering and other stakeholders to refine designs for manufacturability and ensure smooth transition from print to production. Essential Skills At least 7 years of CNC programming experience in a metal machining environment. Expert-level proficiency with CAM software, with a strong preference for Mastercam. Proven experience programming and supporting multi-axis machining, with 3-axis capability required and 4/5-axis experience strongly preferred. Deep knowledge of tooling, workholding, and advanced machining strategies for a variety of metals. Strong ability to troubleshoot machining issues and optimize programs, tooling, and processes for quality and efficiency. Demonstrated skill in reading and interpreting complex blueprints and GD&T requirements. Hands-on experience with CNC mills and CNC lathes in a production environment. Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly explain technical concepts and collaborate across teams. Proven ability to mentor and support machinists and colleagues in improving programming and machining practices. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working with high-mix, low-volume precision parts. Background in aerospace, defense, medical, or other high-precision, regulated industries. Familiarity with ERP or MRP systems to support scheduling, routing, and job tracking. Ability to design fixtures or collaborate effectively with engineering on fixturing solutions. Strong focus on continuous improvement and a track record of reducing cycle times and scrap rates. Comfort working with advanced CAM platforms beyond Mastercam, such as Fusion or similar software. Why Work Here? You will join a team that values craftsmanship, innovation, and continuous improvement, where your expertise and ideas have a direct impact on shop performance and product quality.
