Paint Body Shop Technician 3.6 3.6 out of 5 stars 423 Norton Avenue North, Sylacauga, AL 35150 Full-time Blue Bell Creameries 371 reviews Full-time Role Summary The Paint and Body Technician is responsible for restoring damaged vehicles to original structural integrity, function, and appearance. This role performs body repair, welding, surface preparation, and automotive painting in accordance with safety, quality, and time standards. The technician works closely with supervisors and other shop personnel to complete repairs efficiently while maintaining high workmanship standards. Key Responsibilities Restore damaged and older vehicles to original condition, including structural integrity, function, and appearance. Remove, repair, or replace damaged body parts using hand tools and powered equipment. Fit, weld, and install replacement parts; grind and smooth welded areas as required. Prepare vehicle surfaces for painting, including sanding, masking, priming, and sealing. Mix, tint, and apply paint using spray-guns and spray booth equipment. Apply primers, base coats, and clear coats to achieve proper color match and finish. Remove damaged vehicle sections using metal-cutting tools, grinders, and wrenches. Fill dents and imperfections using plastic fillers or solder as needed. File, grind, sand, and smooth repaired surfaces using hand and power tools. Review damage reports and assist with preparing or reviewing repair cost estimates. Follow supervisor instructions regarding repair scope, methods, and time allocations. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in compliance with shop safety policies. Properly handle and dispose of paints, chemicals, and hazardous materials according to regulations. Other duties as assigned Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Thorough knowledge of automotive body repair and refinishing techniques. Proficiency with automotive paint systems, spray guns, and blending techniques. Ability to read and interpret repair orders, diagrams, and damage reports. Skilled in the use of hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and paint systems. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship. Effective time management skills to meet repair deadlines. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately. Understanding safety practices related to chemicals, equipment, and shop operations. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Technical school training or apprenticeship in automotive body repair or refinishing preferred. 1 year of experience as a Paint and Body Technician or in a related automotive repair role preferred. Certifications such as I‑CAR, ASE Refinishing, or equivalent are a plus. Valid driver's license and acceptable driving records may be required.
Physical Requirements Mobility:
Frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, kneeling, and reaching throughout the shift.
Manual Dexterity:
Continuous use of hands and fingers to operate tools, welding equipment, and spray guns.
Lifting and Carrying:
Ability to lift, carry, and pull materials and parts weighing up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
Visual Acuity:
Requires close, distance, color, and depth perception to inspect damage, match paint colors, and perform detailed work.
Hearing and Speaking:
Ability to hear equipment alarms, instructions, and warnings; ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and team members.
Endurance:
Ability to work extended periods in physically demanding positions. Work Environment Work is primarily performed in an automotive body shop or paint booth environment. Exposure to loud noises from machinery and tools. Regular exposure to paint fumes, dust, chemicals, and other airborne particles; proper personal protective equipment (PPE) is required. Work may involve exposure to heat, cold, and varying humidity levels. Work environment subject to change based on duties performed.
