Sanding Full Job Description Overview:
Laird Manufacturing is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Paint Prep Technician to support our production team by preparing agricultural equipment and metal components for painting. This position plays a critical role in ensuring high-quality finishes through proper cleaning, sanding, masking, priming, and surface preparation techniques. The ideal candidate has experience in manufacturing, paint preparation, auto body work, or a related field and is committed to workplace safety, quality workmanship, and teamwork.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Prepare metal surfaces for painting by cleaning, sanding, grinding, masking, buffing, and removing contaminants Inspect parts and surfaces for damage, corrosion, or defects prior to painting Perform basic surface repairs and apply primers or protective coatings as needed Mix paints, primers, and coatings according to specifications and manufacturer guidelines Operate and maintain paint prep equipment, hand tools, and materials Conduct quality checks to ensure surfaces meet finish requirements Maintain production records, material usage logs, and VOC documentation Monitor inventory levels and notify supervisors when supplies need replenishment Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment Work collaboratively with painters, supervisors, and production staff to meet deadlines Follow all company safety policies and Cal/OSHA regulations regarding PPE, ventilation, and chemical handling Maintain regular and reliable attendance
Qualifications Required:
High school diploma or GED Previous experience in paint preparation, manufacturing, auto body, or related field Ability to safely use sanding tools, grinders, and paint preparation equipment Ability to read and follow work orders and production instructions Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality Ability to work independently and as part of a team Strong understanding of workplace safety practices
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform repetitive tasks throughout the shift Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation Ability to work around paint materials, solvents, dust, fumes, and varying temperatures Occasional work on ladders or elevated platforms using proper safety equipment Required use of PPE including gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, and protective clothing Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
