Job Description

Controls Technician Controls Technician Nottingham, MD $80,000-$100,000 Position Overview We are seeking a skilled Controls Technician to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize industrial control systems. The role focuses on ensuring reliable operation of PLCs, HMIs, and associated control circuits across manufacturing, processing, or automation environments. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with PLC programming and troubleshooting, HMI configuration, and electrical circuits, and will work closely with engineering and maintenance teams to minimize downtime and improve system performance. Key Responsibilities Install, configure, and commission PLCs, HMIs, and other control system components according to specifications and safety standards. Troubleshoot and repair control circuits, sensors, actuators, and related electrical equipment to restore system functionality quickly and safely. Program, modify, and debug PLC ladder logic and function block programs; update HMI screens and tags to reflect operational changes. Perform routine preventive maintenance on control systems and document maintenance activities, parts used, and system changes. Perform system diagnostics using test equipment (multimeter, oscilloscope, communication analyzers) to isolate faults in hardware or software. Collaborate with engineers and production staff to implement control system improvements, upgrades, and root cause analyses for recurring issues. Ensure compliance with electrical codes, safety regulations, and company policies during installation and maintenance activities. Maintain accurate technical documentation including schematics, wiring diagrams, PLC programs, and HMI configurations. Provide technical support and training to operators and maintenance personnel on HMI use, basic troubleshooting, and safe operation of control equipment. Qualifications Associate degree, technical diploma, or equivalent in electrical, electronic, mechatronics, or instrumentation technology (or equivalent hands-on experience). Proven experience working with PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar) including programming, commissioning, and troubleshooting. Experience configuring and maintaining HMIs and operator interfaces; familiarity with common HMI software and communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, Modbus, ProfiNet, etc.). Strong understanding of electrical circuits, wiring practices, ladder diagrams, and control schematics. Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, P&IDs, and wiring diagrams. Proficiency using diagnostic tools such as multimeters, clamp meters, and oscilloscopes. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced industrial environment. Ability to travel 50% Valid electrical license or certifications where applicable, and willingness to obtain additional certifications as required. Ability to work flexible hours, including emergency call-outs or shift work when necessary, and to travel between facilities if required.
