Controls Technician Job Description The Controls Technician programs, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical and control systems in a manufacturing environment. This role ensures the safe and reliable operation of industrial electrical, automation, and control equipment while supporting predictive and preventive maintenance initiatives and collaborating closely with engineers and other technicians. Responsibilities Ensure the safety, reliability, and compliance of all electrical and control systems within the facility. Work on AC and DC circuits, including single- and multi-phase systems, to support production operations. Collaborate with engineers and fellow technicians when working with electrical devices, circuits, and control systems. Perform cabling and wiring work for electronic equipment, computers, and telecommunications equipment. Connect wires to transformers and other electrical components according to established standards and diagrams. Plan and generate layouts for electrical installations and wiring, ensuring accuracy and adherence to specifications. Apply working knowledge of single-line diagrams and physical locations of sub-stations to support maintenance and troubleshooting. Install, remove, repair, and adjust pneumatic and electrical instruments and actuators. Observe automated systems in operation, identify abnormal conditions, and troubleshoot to determine root causes of issues. Install, service, and maintain power circuits, including synchronizing their operation with existing systems. Troubleshoot, program, and debug PLCs (including Siemens and Allen-Bradley), HMIs, relay-based circuits, and networking components. Troubleshoot, replace, and program variable frequency drives (VFDs) to support motor and process control. Support predictive and preventive maintenance programs to reduce downtime and extend equipment life. Initiate purchase orders for required parts and materials to complete repairs and projects. Utilize CAD tools to support design, modification, and documentation of control and electrical systems. Work with pneumatics and hydraulics as part of integrated production and control systems. Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and have the potential to grow into a lead-level controls technician role. Essential Skills 5+ years of experience working with industrial electrical and control systems. Advanced experience with Siemens PLCs, including programming, troubleshooting, and debugging. Ability to troubleshoot, program, and debug Allen-Bradley and Siemens PLCs and HMIs. Strong troubleshooting skills in PLCs, electrical systems, relay-based circuits, and networking. Hands-on electrical experience with AC and DC, single- and multi-phase circuits. Knowledge and experience with industrial electrical and controls systems in a production environment. Ability to troubleshoot, replace, and program variable frequency drives (VFDs). HMI knowledge and experience supporting operator interfaces. Ability to read and work from single-line diagrams and understand sub-station layouts. Experience with pneumatics and hydraulics in an industrial setting. Networking knowledge as it relates to industrial control and automation systems. Ability to install, service, and maintain power circuits, including synchronization of their operation. Strong diagnostic skills for identifying root causes of automation and control issues. Capability to perform cabling and wiring for electronic, computer, and telecommunications equipment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Associate's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Maintenance & Construction, or a related field is preferred. CAD design knowledge to support control system layouts and documentation. Experience with Siemens PLC platforms in a production environment. Knowledge of variable frequency design and industrial circuitry. Familiarity with network infrastructure used in industrial automation. Experience working with production and manufacturing equipment. Ability to plan and generate electrical installation and wiring layouts. Strong communication and teamwork skills to coordinate with engineers and other technicians. Interest in growing into a high-level or lead controls technician role. Work Environment This role operates in a manufacturing environment with rotating shifts of 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Shifts typically rotate every two months among first, second, and third shift to share overnight coverage across the team, with flexibility for individuals who prefer to remain on an off-shift. The facility presents varying noise levels and exposure to both hot and cold conditions, depending on the area and production activity. Personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required in certain spaces to ensure safety. The environment is highly automated and production-focused, offering exposure to modern control systems, PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, pneumatics, hydraulics, and networked industrial equipment. Team members work collaboratively and have the opportunity to develop into high-level controls technicians while enjoying access to unique product perks. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Rochester, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $37.00 - $43.00/hr.
