Scenic Charge Artist Geva Theater - 5.0 Rochester, NY Job Details Full-time $20 - $22 an hour 16 hours ago Qualifications Outdoor work Delegation Full Job Description SUMMARY The Scenic Charge Artist is responsible for facilitating the application of scenic treatments, hiring and supervising scenic artists, and maintaining the scene shop areas and equipment. August 17, 2026 DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITY Manage and support the personnel in the scene shop to promote a safe, healthy, and productive working environment. Monitor safety procedures and the safe operation of tools and equipment. Maintain and repair tools and equipment belonging to the scenic art department. Execute texture and paint treatments determined in collaboration with Scenic Designers according to budget and schedule parameters. Acquire and manage material inventory for the scenic art department, including production-specific purchases. Coordinate with carpentry on the day-to-day pass-off of scenic elements from construction to treatment. Coordinate with production management, carpentry and other production departments on the installation of scenic elements onto the stage according to a mutually created schedule of load-in. Consult with other production departments on paint and texture aspects of their work. Maintain relationships with local freelance scenic artists. Hire and oversee any overhire scenic artists needed for each production. Troubleshoot, touch-up and repair scenic elements as needed during the run of a show. Occasionally be assigned to a special project related to onstage scenic elements such as art installation projects, facilitating commissions of external artists, large print or drop ordering, Geva events, etc. Attend weekly production staff meetings, production meetings, load-in and strike meetings, and technical rehearsal meetings as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated leadership experience in similarly scaled, related positions, or a combination of education and experience providing equivalent knowledge. Experience in leadership, teamwork, and management principles for a diverse staff. Demonstrated knowledge of a wide variety of tools and techniques to paint and texture scenic elements. Ability to delegate tasks to others in order to keep the flow of work moving forward at an efficient rate. Ability to lead and/or supervise crews of scenic artists to get work done efficiently and safely. Knowledge of safety procedures to maintain a safe working environment. Basic computer skills in Word, Excel, and the Internet as needed for research on tools, materials, and procedures. Effective communication skills for asking informed questions and presenting research information. Ability to handle significant responsibility with little or no supervisor while displaying consistent expertise. Ability to take an active leadership role in setting and maintain the levels of production craftsmanship and artistic excellence.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to crouch, twist, turn, bend, stoop, climb stairs and ladders, stand and sit for extended periods of time, reach above, below and at neck level, have full range of neck motion, see near and far with good depth perception, and work indoors and outdoors. Ability to lift and carry 60 lbs. Compensation offered between $20-22/hr depending on experience. Benefits included.
