Job Title:
Mechanical Assembler Job Description This role focuses on assembling test filtration machinery to precise mechanical and quality standards. You will interpret blueprints, select appropriate assembly methods, and use hand and power tools to fit, align, and assemble parts, subassemblies, and equipment. The position also involves making electrical and piping connections, performing operating tests, and completing final adjustments to ensure each unit operates reliably and meets performance requirements. Responsibilities Assemble test filtration machinery in accordance with production and quality standards. Select appropriate assembly methods and erection procedures based on blueprints and engineering drawings. Fit parts to specified tolerances and operating requirements using hand and power tools. Align and assemble subassemblies, motors, pumps, and other components into completed units. Cut and fit pipe and tubing and make necessary piping connections. Make electrical connections and perform basic wiring as required for unit assembly. Position parts according to the layout of the unit or engineering drawings. Fasten parts using bolts, screws, speed clips, and other fasteners. Drill and tap holes to install fasteners and secure components. Remove small quantities of metal with hand files to achieve close fits between parts. Visually inspect parts and assemblies for proper fit, finish, and surface defects. Identify and report discrepancies or nonconforming parts to supervision. Test components and completed units for proper operation and performance. Perform final adjustments and operating tests to verify correct function of machinery. Use troubleshooting skills to identify and correct mechanical and basic electrical issues during assembly. Follow preventive maintenance practices on tools and equipment used in assembly. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area. Collaborate with team members and other departments to meet production schedules. Essential Skills Proven experience in mechanical assembly or machine building in an industrial or manufacturing environment. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and layout diagrams. Strong proficiency with hand and power tools for assembly, drilling, tapping, and fitting. Hands-on experience fitting, aligning, and assembling manufactured and purchased parts, motors, pumps, and subassemblies. Ability to cut and fit pipe and tubing and make basic piping connections. Basic electrical knowledge to make necessary wiring and electrical connections for assembled units. Troubleshooting skills to diagnose and resolve mechanical and basic electrical issues during assembly and testing. Ability to perform visual inspections and identify fit, finish, and surface defects. Mechanical aptitude, including understanding of hydraulics, mechanical systems, and machine components. Capability to perform light fabrication tasks such as drilling, tapping, and filing to achieve proper fit. Comfort working with preventive maintenance practices for tools and equipment. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work from technical documentation. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in welding, fabrication, or maintenance technician work is beneficial. Experience with hydraulics, electrical systems, and mechanical maintenance is a plus. Previous exposure to machine assembly environments or construction-related installation work is advantageous. Comfort working with both mechanical and basic electrical tasks on complex machinery. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team setting. Why Work Here? Work Environment This is a full-time, onsite role in a historic, well-lit facility with plenty of character and natural light from numerous windows. The building, originally constructed in 1906, can experience temperature variations depending on the season; it may be warmer in the summer and cooler in the winter. During hotter months, fans and open doors help with airflow, and cold drinks and frozen treats are provided to help keep employees comfortable. The operation runs multiple shifts, with several positions on first shift (typically 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) and others on second shift (typically 3:15 p.m. to 11:45 p.m.), including a 30-minute lunch. Standard shifts are 8 hours, with the possibility of 10-hour days as needed. There may be occasional Saturday work, up to 8 hours, and some days may require an earlier start time such as 6:00 a.m., so flexibility with scheduling is important. The environment is hands-on and industrial, where you regularly use hand and power tools and work around machinery while following appropriate safety practices and attire. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Rockford, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $24.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
