Job Description

SMI Sign Systems, Inc. dba Modulex Mid-Atlantic is a unique, fast-paced architectural sign company with complete commercial in-house manufacturing capabilities based in Frederick, Maryland. We are seeking a self-motivated, high-energy, team player to assist our growth in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Reports To:
Paint Department Lead/Production Manager Position Summary The Paint Prep Technician supports the paint and finishing department in preparing, coating, and finishing signage components. This role is critical to ensuring high-quality, durable finishes across a variety of sign types, including interior and exterior signage. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, dependable, and comfortable working in a fast-paced production environment. Key Responsibilities Assist painters with preparation of sign components, including cleaning, sanding, masking, and priming Support application of paints, coatings, and finishes under supervision Prepare materials such as aluminum, acrylic and PVC for painting Maintain clean and organized work areas, including spray booths and prep stations Mix paints and coatings per manufacturer specifications and job requirements Load and unload parts for painting and curing processes Inspect finished products for quality, consistency, and defects Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of PPE and ventilation systems Assist with inventory of paint supplies and notify team of low stock Support other production departments as needed Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent preferred Prior experience in painting, automotive finishing, or manufacturing environment is a plus, but not required Willingness to learn paint processes, equipment, and materials Strong attention to detail and quality standards Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team Basic understanding of hand tools and shop equipment Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods Ability to lift up to 50 lbs Comfortable working in a production/shop environment with exposure to paint fumes (with proper PPE) Ability to bend, reach, and move materials throughout the shift Work Environment Manufacturing/production setting Exposure to paints, solvents, and shop equipment (PPE provided) Fast-paced environment with deadlines and production schedules What We Offer Competitive pay based on experience Opportunities for advancement within production and finishing departments On-the-job training and skill development
Pay:
$20.00 - $28.00 per hour
