Paint Prep Technician Job Description This role supports the paint department by preparing metal parts for painting and finishing, ensuring high-quality coated products are ready for shipment to customers. You will work with hand and power tools to clean, sand, mask, and handle materials, and you will assist with painting finished products as needed. Responsibilities Prepare metal surfaces for coating by using power grinders and sanders to remove rust, scale, and weld splatter. Prepare parts for painting by hanging items on racks and placing larger items on carts or fixtures. Move prepared items to drying areas and stage parts for further painting or assembly. Wash parts and mask areas that should not be painted to ensure clean and accurate finishes. Mix polyurethane and epoxy coating materials with reducers, thinners, and hardeners to the correct ratios according to specifications. Assist with painting finished products before they are shipped to customers, following established procedures and quality standards. Handle materials safely and efficiently throughout the production and finishing process. Use hand tools and power tools in a safe and effective manner to support paint preparation and metal finishing activities. Support general production tasks and provide auxiliary support to the paint department as needed. Essential Skills Experience using hand tools and power tools in an industrial or manufacturing setting. Industrial manufacturing experience, including working in a production or fabrication environment. Experience with grinding, including the use of power grinders for metal preparation. Ability to perform paint preparation tasks such as sanding, masking, and metal finishing. Capability to handle materials safely and efficiently in a shop environment. Basic understanding of mixing coating materials such as polyurethane and epoxy with reducers, thinners, and hardeners to proper ratios. Comfort working with general labor and production tasks in a fast-paced industrial environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience in paint prep or industrial painting is beneficial. Experience with sanding and metal finishing processes. Familiarity with manufacturing production workflows and material handling equipment. Attention to detail when masking and preparing parts for painting. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and adhere to safety procedures. Strong work ethic and reliability in a first-shift schedule. Why Work Here? Work Environment This position operates in an industrial shop environment with open bay doors serving the fabrication department. You will work on the first shift, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The setting includes typical manufacturing conditions such as noise, moving equipment, and the use of hand and power tools. You will handle metal parts, operate grinders and sanders, and work around paint and coating materials, following all safety guidelines and procedures. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Wilsonville, OR. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
