In this role, you will apply your horticultural expertise to maintain the Flamingo Gardens grounds, with an emphasis on Integrated plant pest management. This technician will be responsible for fertilizer applications, weed, and pest management within the Flamingo Gardens property. They will also assist the Horticulture team with horticulture tasks such as lawn mowing, yard waste cleanup and removal, proper routine plant maintenance such as palm, tree, and shrub trimming, and will assist in ensuring the effective and proper care of horticultural displays and living collections. This paid position offers an exciting opportunity to work with a variety of horticultural techniques and tools while contributing to a historic botanical garden. Duties Perform planting, pruning, fertilizing, watering, and pest control to promote healthy growth of plants, shrubs, trees, and flowers. Operate hand tools and power tools safely and efficiently for landscape maintenance, gardening, and farming tasks. Maintain irrigation systems to ensure proper watering schedules and troubleshoot issues as they arise. Support plant care operations by monitoring plant health, applying fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. Assist with lawn care activities including mowing, trimming, and edging to keep outdoor spaces lush and well-manicured. Conduct landscape maintenance tasks such as mulching, weeding, soil preparation, and seasonal clean-up. Collaborate with team members on seasonal projects or garden renovations to ensure timely completion of projects. Experience Proven professional experience in horticulture or related fields such as gardening, landscaping, or farming. Familiarity with irrigation systems and plant care operations is highly desirable. Hands-on knowledge of growing techniques across different plant types and environments. Experience using hand tools such as pruners, shovels, rakes, and hoes; proficiency with power tools is a plus. Strong understanding of horticultural principles including soil health, plant nutrition, pest management and sustainable practices. Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions while maintaining safety standards. Excellent teamwork skills combined with a proactive attitude toward learning new techniques in landscape maintenance and horticulture. Certifications Required Applicants must currently hold (or obtain within 90 days of hire) the following certifications to be considered for this role: GI-BMP certification Limited Urban Commercial Fertilizer Applicator Certification Limited Private Applicator Certification Candidates must have a minimum of 3 years of professional landscape or horticulture experience in South Florida. Applicants must also meet the following: Ability to read pesticide & fertilizer labels, apply pesticides and fertilizers correctly and follow all safety procedures Possess the ability to properly utilize new equipment and follow safety procedures while using this equipment. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to lift 50lbs. Work in an upright position for long periods of time. Ability to work in different environmental working conditions (eg. heat, cold, wind, rain). Walk, enter and exit vehicles, and climb stairs; Handle, grasp, and use objects and equipment.
