Farmers Market Vendor/ Salesperson Berries and Flour Champaign, IL 61822 From $17 an hour - Part-time From $17 an hour - Part-time Overview Join our dynamic culinary team at
Berries and Flour:
Bakery & Harvest Goods in NW Champaign. Our mission is to support small to medium local farms that grow specialty crops by serving as a wholesale product manufacturer. We purchase seasonal food and process it to sell to chefs and institutions, and use in our own product line of jams, simple syrups & shrubs, and dehydrated flowers, herbs, and spices. We are a unique kitchen! We are a wholesale manufacturer, which means we make products for others to sell and use. Because of the seasonality of our ingredients, and the variety of products our clients want, every week seems to bring a new project! This role offers an opportunity to contribute to Berries and Flour through sales. Currently, we participate in: Urbana Farmers Market Saturdays 7a-12p Champaign Farmers Market Tuesdays 3p-6p Bloomington Farmers Market Saturdays 7a-12p Glenview Farmers Market Saturdays 7a-12p There are many opportunities to add different markets, pop-ups, and tastings at some of our retail partners' locations. We participate in Illinois Department of Agriculture fairs and expo markets, too. You would be paid for pick-up from the farm, set-up, tear-down, and return to the farm. You will be expected to train in the kitchen for 5-10 days to have first-hand knowledge of the whole company and get to know how the products are made. If appropriate, you can tackle sales of our product line across the state, through Faire, Little Blue Market, our website, and others. Most of our staff can utilize their other creative skills as well. Some take photos, some tend a garden for us, and others write copy. As part of a small staff, you will learn a wide variety of skills and this position is perfect for motivated individuals ready to make a positive impact in our agricultural region through food. Vending pay is $17/hr with a 1% commission on all sales. Responsibilities Excellent customer service Ability to bring people into the booth, teach about Berries and Flour and the local food cycle, talk about the products and what folks can do with them, and making sales. Sales help to support all of the work of Berries and Flour. Support food handling and safety protocols to maintain a clean, hygienic market booth with sampling Recognize the fruits, vegetables, flowers, nuts, herbs, and spices Berries and Flour uses Accurately complete and file records Assist with inventory management and organization Collaborate and communicate with the crew Ability to do basic math and accurately handle money and a POS system (Square) All of the staff are ambassadors for the mission and work of Berries and Flour Commitment to local and native foods Support of local growers, food systems, and food security (or willingness to learn) Education of nature and plants, particularly native species, local ecosystems and landscapes (or willingness to learn) Qualifications We are looking for: Good work ethic Timely and reliable Dependable, honest, accountable, shows initiative, and adaptability Excellent communication with employer, colleagues (in person, email, and text), and customers Can work independently and as part of a productive group Strong knowledge of food safety standards and proper hygiene procedures Valid Food Handler's License Valid IL Farmers Market Sampling License Valid driver's license; safe driving record Vendor-specific Quick, accurate, and efficient action

A friendly, outgoing personality that builds quick rapport with customers at the Berries and Flour booths Excellent sales and marketing capabilities Ability to work in a fast-paced setting while maintaining attention to detail Commitment to learning and growing into sales role
Active Listening:
The ability to understand what flavors a customer prefers so you can recommend the perfect product(s)
Persuasion & Storytelling:
Skill in sharing the "story" behind Berries and Flour products (e.g., local ingredients, small-batch cooking) and effectively offering samples.
Product Knowledge:
Knowing the flavor profiles, ingredients, farms, food cycle, uses, and pairings of products. Preferences 1-2 years in a customer-facing, retail, or food service role Ability to work all year Experience working in a fast-paced food industry environment Familiar with cooking and mixology We are an equal opportunity employer.
