Art Handler & Shipping Specialist (Gallery)

Job Overview San Francisco Street Art Gallery is seeking a dependable, physically capable, detail-oriented Art Handler & Shipping Specialist to assist with gallery operations, specialized art packing and shipping, installation, maintenance, and inventory handling. This is a hands-on position within a fast-paced fine art gallery environment. The ideal candidate is organized, mechanically inclined, comfortable working with tools, capable of physical labor, and able to maintain a professional attitude while working closely with staff, artists, and clients. This position combines art handling, shipping logistics, handyman skills, inventory management, light restoration, and gallery preparation work. Responsibilities Gallery Shipping & Logistics Prepare artwork for local, national, and white-glove delivery shipping Build and assemble custom shipping materials and protective packaging Coordinate shipping preparation for FedEx, freight carriers, and art delivery services Label, organize, and track outgoing shipments Assist with shipping logs and inventory tracking systems Load and unload artwork safely and efficiently Assist with receiving incoming artwork and inspecting for damage Organize backstock and storage areas Light art restoration Specialized Art Packing Wrap and protect fine artwork using professional packing methods Build boxes, soft packs, corner protection, and custom packaging solutions Handle paintings, sculpture, glass, and mixed media artwork carefully Prepare artwork for long-distance transport and installation Maintain shipping and packing supply inventory Art Handling & Installation Install artwork within gallery spaces and client locations Move large and heavy artwork safely with team support Assist with wall layout, hanging systems, and presentation preparation Stretch canvas when needed Assist with light restoration and touch-up work under direction Handle artwork professionally and safely at all times Gallery Maintenance & Handyman Work General gallery cleaning and maintenance Basic repair and handyman tasks Maintain workshop and storage organization Assist with painting walls, patching, lighting adjustments, and minor repairs Help maintain professional appearance of gallery spaces Driving & Deliveries Local pickups and deliveries Transport artwork between locations when needed Maintain safe handling practices during transport Must have reliable transportation and valid driver's license

Qualifications:

Required Strong English communication skills Ability to lift and move heavy artwork and materials Reliable, punctual, and organized Team-player attitude Comfortable using hand tools and basic workshop equipment Ability to follow detailed instructions carefully Professional demeanor Valid driver's license and clean driving record Preferred (Not Required) Experience in galleries, framing, shipping, moving, warehouse, or art handling Experience with custom framing or canvas stretching Experience with inventory systems or logistics Basic handyman or construction experience Experience driving cargo vans or delivery vehicles Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods Ability to lift, carry, and move heavy artwork and shipping materials Ability to climb ladders and work with large wall installations Comfortable working in a physically active environment Ability to lift and move heavy artwork and materials Comfortable performing physical work throughout the day Work Environment This is an active, hands-on gallery position involving physical labor, teamwork, shipping coordination, organization, and artwork handling. Some days are fast-paced and physically demanding, especially during installations, deliveries, and shipping preparation periods.
