Mechanical Maintenance Technician - San Diego, CA - Career Opportunity Job Description This role performs preventative and corrective mechanical repairs, installations, and maintenance on yard facilities, utilities, and a wide range of production equipment. The technician uses strong mechanical aptitude to diagnose failures, ensure safe and reliable operations, and support continuous production by maintaining equipment such as pumps, piping systems, conveyors, gearboxes, rolling stock, HVAC systems, diesel engines, and automated equipment. Responsibilities Perform mechanical repairs, installations, and preventative and corrective maintenance on yard facilities, utilities, and production equipment. Inspect equipment regularly to ensure safe, reliable, and compliant operation. Diagnose mechanical failures quickly using mechanical knowledge and problem-solving skills. Perform repair and installation work on infrastructure, production equipment, rolling stock equipment, HVAC systems, diesel engines, conveyance systems, automated equipment, and other equipment as required by the position. Service and repair equipment using test equipment, hand tools, pneumatic tools, and other power tools. Complete required documentation accurately, including work orders, inspection forms, discrepancy sheets, logbooks, and service forms. Perform installations, repairs, and maintenance on all utility distribution systems throughout the facilities. Repair buildings, structures, production equipment, and portable production support equipment within the facilities. Use measuring equipment such as tape measures, rulers, dial indicators, calipers, depth gauges, and feeler gauges to verify dimensions and tolerances. Use basic hand tools and specialized tools such as gear pullers, hydraulic jacks, torque wrenches, and impact wrenches safely and effectively. Follow established energy recognition, personal protective equipment, and lock/tag out procedures at all times. Work in varied whole-body positions, including at heights and in confined spaces with limited visibility, to perform repair work. Read and interpret schematics, diagrams, piping plans, and manufacturer-supplied documentation to plan and execute repairs and installations. Communicate effectively by understanding written and verbal instructions, hearing warning signals, and reading and comprehending safety instructions, regulations, and warnings. Perform other tasks relevant to the mechanical maintenance trade as assigned. Essential Skills At least 3 years of mechanical maintenance experience working on pumps and piping systems, conveyors, and gearboxes. High school education combined with a trade school certificate in mechanical training, or equivalent work experience performing mechanical repairs. Proven experience in maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing systems in a production environment. Ability to read and comprehend schematics, diagrams, piping plans, and manufacturer-supplied documentation. Strong mechanical repair skills in areas such as pumps, valves, conveyors, boilers, and facility equipment. Hands-on experience with preventative maintenance procedures and maintenance repairs. Proficiency using test equipment, hand tools, pneumatic tools, and other power tools. Ability to use measuring tools including tape measures, rulers, dial indicators, calipers, depth gauges, and feeler gauges. Capability to use specialized tools such as gear pullers, hydraulic jacks, torque wrenches, and impact wrenches. Working knowledge of hydraulics and basic electrical troubleshooting related to mechanical systems. Ability to work safely at heights and in confined spaces with limited visibility. Ability to work any shift as required by operational needs. Capacity to understand written and verbal instructions and respond to warning signals and safety notifications. Commitment to follow energy recognition procedures, personal protective equipment requirements, and lock/tag out procedures. Additional Skills & Qualifications Specialized training in areas such as diesel engines, automated equipment, or related systems. Experience maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing diesel engines, automated equipment, or similar production systems. Knowledge of crane repair and crane maintenance. Proficiency as an outside machinist or similar mechanical trade role. Experience with HVAC systems, plumbing, and facility maintenance. Ability to perform precision measurement and alignment work. Understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic systems beyond basic operation. Experience with engine repair and overhaul. Ability to fabricate using cutting tools (preferred but not required). Experience working with conveyance systems, rolling stock equipment, and automated production equipment. Strong troubleshooting skills for mechanical, hydraulic, and related electrical issues. Work Environment Work takes place at various locations throughout large industrial and production facilities. The role involves working on facility infrastructure, utilities, production equipment, rolling stock, cranes, conveyors, pumps, valves, boilers, HVAC systems, and other mechanical systems using test equipment, hand tools, pneumatic tools, and power tools. Technicians work in varied whole-body positions, including at heights and in confined spaces with limited visibility. The position requires flexibility to work any shift as needed to support operations. Safety procedures, including energy recognition, personal protective equipment, and lock/tag out practices, are an integral part of daily work. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Diego, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $33.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
