Job Description
Job Title:
Manual / Conventional Machinist Job Description Join a dynamic, repair-focused machine shop as a Manual / Conventional Machinist, where you will work on high-value turbine and rotating equipment components for power generation and heavy industrial applications. You will set up and operate manual machines, perform precision repairs and modifications, and contribute to a collaborative team that takes pride in delivering high-quality, detail-oriented work. Responsibilities Set up and operate manual and conventional machining equipment, including lathes, mills, drill presses, shears, grinders, and other shop machinery. Machine, repair, refurbish, and modify turbine and rotating equipment components, shafts, housings, and other heavy industrial parts to precise tolerances. Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and specifications to determine machining requirements and appropriate setups. Perform quality checks on in-process and finished products using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, and bore gauges. Assist in the disassembly, inspection, repair, and reassembly of mechanical components as needed to support repair-focused projects. Troubleshoot machining issues, identify root causes, and adjust setups, tooling, or processes to ensure dimensional accuracy and surface finish requirements. Collaborate closely with team members to plan jobs, solve technical challenges, and share best practices for manual machining and repair work. Assist in developing and refining machining processes and techniques to improve efficiency, repeatability, and overall product quality. Document production processes, repair steps, and measurements, and maintain accurate records of work performed for traceability and quality control. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, following all safety protocols and best practices for operating manual machines and handling heavy components. Care for and properly use personal and shop tools, including measuring instruments and machine accessories, to ensure consistent performance. Provide your own pair of steel toe boots and wear them consistently in the shop environment. Essential Skills Proven experience as a Manual / Conventional Machinist or in a closely related machining role. Hands-on experience setting up and operating manual lathes, mills, and other conventional machining equipment. Experience machining turbine components, rotating equipment, or heavy industrial parts, with a strong preference for repair and refurbishment work. Background in repair-focused machining environments rather than high-volume production machining. Strong understanding of machining processes, cutting tools, speeds and feeds, and common engineering materials. Ability to read and interpret technical documents, including blueprints, schematics, and detailed work instructions. Proficiency in the use of precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, and bore gauges. Solid mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot issues and think through complex mechanical and machining problems. Excellent attention to detail and a strong commitment to quality and precision. Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented shop environment. Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies, processes, and machining techniques. High school diploma or equivalent. Additional Skills & Qualifications Certification or formal training in machining or a related trade is a plus. Experience with CNC machining in addition to manual machining is beneficial. Familiarity with operating additional shop equipment such as drill presses, shears, and other manual machine tools. Experience working in large machine shops or environments handling large, high-value components. Ability to assist with mechanical disassembly and reassembly of rotating and turbine equipment. Strong organizational skills for documenting work, measurements, and repair steps accurately. Why Work Here? Join a family-owned, tight-knit organization where your craftsmanship is valued and your contributions are visible. You will work in a collaborative environment that emphasizes teamwork, mutual support, and pride in delivering high-quality work. The culture encourages learning, knowledge sharing, and professional growth, giving you the opportunity to deepen your expertise in complex, high-value machining and repair projects. Work Environment Work in a large, well-equipped machine shop focused on repair, refurbishment, and manufacturing of turbine and rotating equipment components for power generation and heavy industrial applications. You will regularly operate manual lathes, mills, grinders, drill presses, shears, and other conventional machinery, and use precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, and bore gauges. The environment is hands-on, mechanically oriented, and highly collaborative, with a strong emphasis on safety, cleanliness, and organization.
