Job Description
Job Title:
Manual Machinist Job Description The Manual Machinist operates traditional machine shop equipment such as mills, lathes, grinders, and drill presses, after setup by more experienced machinists, to produce production parts within required tolerances. This role focuses on true manual machining, working primarily with older manual machines and lathes, ensuring accurate, high-quality parts and reliable machine operation throughout the shift. Responsibilities Operate manual machine shop equipment, including mills, lathes, grinders, drill presses, and cut-off saws, to produce parts to specified tolerances. Keep machines running properly by monitoring performance, making necessary adjustments, and ensuring sufficient production materials are available. Communicate effectively with operators on other shifts to ensure smooth handoffs and consistent production. Maintain and secure work tools, ensuring they are stored properly and kept in good working condition. Clean and maintain the work area regularly to support a safe and organized production environment. Follow instructions and production priorities provided by the supervisor and/or production lead. Communicate machine issues promptly to Maintenance to minimize downtime and prevent further equipment damage. Perform basic preventative maintenance on machines during downtime as directed. Turn off equipment when not in use to support safety and energy conservation. Read and interpret blueprints to understand part specifications and machining requirements. Perform manual set-ups and runs, focusing on precise, hands-on machining rather than automated or button-push operations. Carry out other related duties as assigned to support overall production goals. Essential Skills Ability to operate manual machine shop equipment such as mills, lathes, grinders, and drill presses. Hands-on experience using one or more of the following tools: manual lathe, milling machine, drill press, vertical cut-off saw, and horizontal cut-off saw. Ability to read and interpret blueprints to produce parts to required tolerances. Basic reading and writing skills, typically obtained through a high school diploma or equivalent. Advanced arithmetic skills sufficient to perform measurements, conversions, and machining calculations. Manual dexterity for precise operation of machinery and use of related tools and equipment. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds as needed in a production environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working with older manual machines, particularly equipment from the late 1980s and 1990s. Manual lathe experience preferred, with the ability to perform set-ups and runs independently. Experience in true manual machining, with a focus on hands-on adjustments rather than automated CNC or button-push operations. Familiarity with CNC equipment is beneficial but not required. Experience working with lathes and grinders in a production or manufacturing setting. Ability to follow detailed instructions from supervisors and production leads and to work effectively as part of a multi-shift team. Why Work Here? You will join a stable production environment that values traditional machining skills and hands-on craftsmanship. The workplace offers the opportunity to work with well-established manual equipment, develop and refine true machining expertise, and contribute directly to the quality of the finished product. Team members benefit from a collaborative atmosphere where communication between shifts is encouraged, and where reliability, safety, and pride in workmanship are recognized and appreciated. Work Environment This role is based in a production and manufacturing environment that uses older, fully manual machines and lathes, primarily from the late 1980s and 1990s. You will work around mills, lathes, grinders, drill presses, and vertical and horizontal cut-off saws in a busy shop setting. The position involves standing for extended periods, frequent use of hands for precise manual operations, and lifting up to 50 pounds. The work area requires regular cleaning and organization, and you will follow standard shop safety practices and wear appropriate industrial attire and protective equipment suitable for a machine shop environment.
