Job Title:
2nd Shift CNC Swiss Lathe Machinist Job Description The 2nd Shift CNC Swiss Lathe Machinist sets up, adjusts, and operates CNC Swiss lathes and related CNC equipment to produce precision components in a clean, climate-controlled job shop environment. This role uses Mazatrol on Mazak machines, reads complex blueprints with geometric tolerancing, performs precision measurements, and makes program edits and tooling adjustments to maintain high-quality production on a 4-day work week (Monday-Thursday, 3:00 p.m.-1:30 a.m.). Responsibilities Set up, adjust, and operate CNC Swiss lathes and other CNC machines within the department, with a focus on mills and Swiss CNC equipment. Use Mazatrol language on Mazak machines to run and adjust CNC programs as needed. Read and interpret layouts, job packets, and blueprints, including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), for the parts being produced. Perform necessary side operations during machine cycle time, following established setup procedures and recommending improvements when appropriate. Use micrometers, calipers, gauges, coordinate measuring machines (CMM), and other inspection tools to verify dimensions and tolerances, ensuring parts meet quality standards. Perform in-process and final inspections to maintain quality and provide accurate inventory counts. Log production data, inspection findings, and other required information in an accurate and timely manner. Adjust and replace cutting tools as necessary to maintain part quality and machine efficiency. Read and understand CNC programs and operational layouts, making program edits within defined parameters when required. Determine and apply proper tooling requirements, including pre-setting tools, to efficiently set up and operate machines in the department. Work from work orders and job packets to complete production runs according to schedule and specification. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with shop standards and procedures. Collaborate with team members and leadership to troubleshoot machining issues and support continuous improvement efforts. Essential Skills At least 3 years of experience operating CNC Swiss lathes in a production or job shop environment. Proven experience performing CNC setups and making program edits at the machine control. Strong blueprint reading skills, including understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). Hands-on experience with precision measuring and tolerancing in a job shop setting. Proficiency using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other precision inspection tools. Ability to read and understand CNC programs and operational layouts. Demonstrated understanding of tooling requirements, including selection and pre-setting of tools for CNC machines. Experience operating CNC mills and Swiss CNC equipment. Ability to inspect parts using CMM or similar advanced measurement equipment. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, accurate parts. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, work orders, and setup procedures. Capability to work 2nd shift, Monday through Thursday, 3:00 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., on a 4/10 schedule. Additional Skills & Qualifications Mazatrol experience on Mazak machines. Experience with Swiss lathe brands such as Citizen or similar equipment. a job shop environment producing a variety of custom or small-batch parts. Familiarity with inspection processes and documentation of quality and production data. Comfort working with both power and hand tools in a precision manufacturing setting. Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to recommend process or setup improvements. Ability to work effectively in a cell-based production environment and collaborate with team members. Work is performed in manufacturing cells using CNC Swiss lathes, CNC mills, Mazak machines with Mazatrol controls, and a variety of inspection tools such as micrometers, calipers, gauges, and CMM equipment. Team members work from blueprints and work orders to produce and assemble components such as pumps, air manifolds, and full machines.
