Job Title:
2nd Shift Machinist Job Description The Machinist sets up and operates a variety of manual and CNC machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments in a custom machine shop environment. This role fabricates, modifies, and repairs mechanical components and machine tools, applying strong knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. The position works on 2nd shift, taking on diverse, large-scale, and complex work pieces while maintaining high standards of quality and efficiency. Responsibilities Set up and operate a variety of machine tools, including manual and CNC lathes, mills, shapers, grinders, and drill presses, to produce precision parts and instruments. Calculate dimensions and tolerances using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers and vernier calipers. Machine parts to exact specifications using appropriate machine tools and machining techniques. Set up, adjust, and operate basic and specialized machine tools to perform precision machining operations. Align and securely clamp holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines to ensure safe and accurate machining. Measure, examine, and test completed units with precision instruments to check for defects and verify conformance to specifications. Monitor machine feed and speed during machining operations and make adjustments as needed to maintain quality and efficiency. Maintain machine tools in proper operational condition through routine checks and basic maintenance tasks. Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information to determine the methods, sequences of operations, and tooling needed to fabricate products. Operate equipment to verify operational efficiency and troubleshoot basic issues. Check workpieces during machining to ensure they are properly lubricated or cooled to prevent damage and maintain tolerances. Program computers or electronic controls for numerically controlled machine tools, including Haas CNC equipment, as required. Diagnose machine tool malfunctions and determine the need for adjustments, repairs, or replacement of parts. Confer with engineering, supervisory, or manufacturing personnel to exchange technical information and clarify requirements. Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock to indicate placement of cuts and machining operations. Fit and assemble parts to build or repair machine tools and related equipment. Set up or operate metalworking, brazing, heat-treating, welding, or cutting equipment as needed for specific jobs. Dispose of scrap and waste material in accordance with company policies and environmental regulations. Separate scrap, waste, and related materials for reuse, recycling, or proper disposal. Evaluate machining procedures and recommend changes or modifications to improve efficiency, quality, or adaptability. Dismantle machines or equipment using hand tools or power tools to examine parts for defects and replace defective components as needed. Install repaired parts into equipment or install new equipment and verify proper operation. Quickly learn shop processes and equipment with minimal training and independently run CNC machines and manual lathes on 2nd shift. Essential Skills Proven experience operating Haas CNC machines. Experience working in a custom machine shop environment. Ability to set up and operate CNC and manual lathes, including large-scale workpieces. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and engineering information. Proficiency in using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, vernier calipers, and related tools. Strong machining skills on mills, lathes, drill presses, and other standard machine tools. Capability to perform machine setups, including changeovers and tooling adjustments. Mechanical aptitude and understanding of mechanics, metal properties, and machining procedures. Ability to monitor and adjust machine feed and speed during operations. Competence in diagnosing machine tool malfunctions and determining required adjustments or repairs. Basic ability to program or operate numerically controlled machine tools using conversational controls or similar interfaces. High School Diploma or equivalent. Minimum of 2 years of machining experience. Ability to work 2nd shift (4:00 pm - 12:30 am, Monday-Thursday) with overtime on Friday and Saturday from 2:30 pm - 10:30 pm as needed. Ability to work with minimal training and quickly adapt to shop processes and equipment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Technical school certificate in machining or a related field is desirable. Experience with American, LeBlond, and Kingston machines is preferred. Experience handling large-scale workpieces and heavy-duty machining operations. Familiarity with Haas controls and conversational CNC programming. Experience performing changeovers and setups on CNC and manual machines. Comfort working with metalworking, brazing, heat-treating, welding, or cutting equipment. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to recommend improvements to machining procedures. Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, supervisory, and manufacturing personnel to exchange technical information. Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, precision components. Ability to work independently on 2nd shift and manage multiple jobs in a custom shop environment. Why Work Here? Work Environment The role is based in an enclosed fabrication and machine shop that is not climate controlled, so temperatures will vary with the seasons. The environment is typical for a busy fabrication shop of this size: dirty, rough, and tough, with metalworking, machining, and fabrication activities occurring throughout the facility. You will work around CNC and manual machines, including Haas equipment, manual lathes, mills, drill presses, and related metalworking tools. The position is on 2nd shift, working Monday through Thursday from 4:00 pm to 12:30 am, with regular overtime opportunities on Friday and Saturday from 2:30 pm to 10:30 pm. You are expected to step in quickly with minimal training, take ownership of running CNC machines and manual lathes, and be comfortable in a hands-on, industrial shop setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Pulaski, TN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.
