Job Description
Mechanical Development Company is a full service machine shop located in the heart of the Roanoke Valley since 1950. We are looking for an experienced machinist to join our team to operate both our manual and CNC equipment. Essential Functions The Machinist manufactures and inspects detailed parts and tools from blueprints, sketches, drawings, verbal instructions and worn or destroyed parts using a variety of machining tools and equipment (mills, lathes, drill presses, grinders, jib bores, and other machining equipment). Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and vernier calipers. Recognize, deploy and properly use machinery, fixtures, tooling and inserts in the set-up and operation of machinery with little or no supervision. Determine the necessary cutting speed and feed rates, tools, materials and machines required to produce the desired component in the most cost and time efficient manner. Perform in-process and final piece inspection of own work utilizing micrometers, calipers and other high precision measuring devices. Operate both manual, conversational, and CNC equipment. employees in machine set-up and operation, drawing interpretation and machining principles. Keep work area clean and free from safety hazards. Maintain acceptable quality and efficiency level. Work safely and comply with all established safety rules and work practices. Qualifications Programming experience is preferred Working knowledge of lathes, mills and a variety of manual equipment is necessary and an expert level of knowledge in either lathes or mills or both. Ability to work with tight tolerances (i.e. .0005'' to .001'') and meet allotted time frames Ability to read and interpret a variety of blueprints found in machine shop work and work from sketches, process sheets, verbal instruction and worn or destroyed parts. Ability and drive to troubleshoot issues and bring about solutions. Knowledge and understanding of machine shop mathematics, including basic algebra and geometry. Must have strong general mechanical skills. Must have some machinist tools. Ability to communicate with customers, co-workers and management in a positive manner. Quality conscious with the ability to meet productivity goals. Detail oriented self-motivated. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. and able to stand/walk for entire shift.
