You will manage the full machining process from blueprint interpretation and machine setup to machining and inspection, ensuring high-quality parts in a deadline-driven machine shop environment. Responsibilities Set up CNC lathes with Fanuc controls for short-run production of larger parts, including tooling, offsets, and program selection. Interpret and work from blueprints and technical drawings to determine machining operations, dimensions, and tolerances. Program or edit programs at the machine using G and M codes to achieve the required features and dimensions. Operate CNC lathes to machine large components, using either vertical or horizontal turning experience as applicable. Perform in-process inspection of your own parts using micrometers, calipers, and other precision measuring tools to verify dimensions and tolerances. Apply GD&T principles during setup, machining, and inspection to ensure parts meet geometric and dimensional requirements. Document and communicate any issues related to quality, tooling, or machine performance to maintain consistent output. Maintain a clean and safe work area, following all required PPE and safety procedures in a machine shop environment. Prioritize quality over speed while still working effectively within a deadline-intensive production schedule. Essential Skills At least 5 years of experience performing complete setups on CNC lathes with Fanuc controls. Experience machining larger parts, with a minimum of 1 year working with large components. A minimum of 5 years of experience checking your own parts using micrometers and calipers during the machining process. At least 5 years of experience or relevant education in GD&T, with the ability to demonstrate this knowledge in testing. Proficiency with Fanuc controls, including program setup, operation, and adjustments. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings accurately. Experience with G and M code programming and editing at the machine. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality parts. Capability to work effectively in a deadline-driven production environment while maintaining quality standards. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with vertical or horizontal turning on CNC lathes. CMM experience for part inspection is a plus. Top-of-class technical school graduates with hands-on CNC experience and strong interest in vertical turning may be considered. Solid understanding of machining principles, tooling, and workholding for large parts. Strong problem-solving skills for troubleshooting machining and quality issues. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision once trained. Why Work Here? You will join a professional machine shop that values craftsmanship and precision, where quality consistently takes priority over speed. The environment encourages the use of modern CNC technologies and continuous development of technical skills, especially in complex turning and GD&T. You can expect clear expectations, structured processes, and the opportunity to work on challenging large-part projects that build your expertise and career in advanced machining. Work Environment This is a production machine shop environment with CNC lathes and related inspection equipment. The culture is deadline intensive, yet strongly focused on quality over speed. Employees wear company-issued uniforms and must follow all required PPE and safety protocols typical of a machining facility. You will work around large parts, CNC equipment, and precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, and potentially CMMs. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Virginia Beach, VA.
