These machines, specifically duplex mills and double disc grinders, use two opposing cutting heads or abrasive wheels to simultaneously machine two parallel sides of a metal part. This role is critical for producing high-volume, "machine-ready" metal blanks with ultra-tight geometric tolerances, exceptional flatness, and perfect parallelism. --- Core Machine Operations • Duplex Milling (Twin Milling): The operator sets up two opposing horizontal spindles equipped with shell cutters. The machine faces two parallel edges of a metal block at the same time, cutting raw production times in half. •

Double Disc Grinding:

The operator runs machinery featuring two opposing abrasive grinding wheels. The workpiece passes between them to remove equal amounts of stock from both sides simultaneously. This process relieves internal material stress and prevents thin metal sheets from bowing or warping. --- Key Duties and Responsibilities •

Machine Setup and Calibration:

Mounting appropriate shell cutters or selecting and balancing abrasive grinding wheels based on the material type (e.g., aluminum, stainless steel). •

CNC Programming and Input:

Reading technical blueprints and entering dimensional targets into CNC control interfaces, such as Fanuc or Mitsubishi. •

Part Inspection and Quality Control:

Using high-precision tools including micrometers, calipers, and surface indicators to check parts against blueprints for flatness, thickness variation, and parallelism tolerances. •

Wheel Dressing and Maintenance:

Frequently dressing abrasive wheels to keep them sharp and flat, maintaining the necessary coolant flow, and monitoring machine vibrations to prevent equipment wear. •

Material Handling:

Ensuring proper loading and unloading of parts. --- Required Skills & Qualifications •

Technical Blueprint Reading:

Ability to interpret geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) symbols. •

Precision Measurement:

Mastery of precision instruments like depth gauges, micrometers, and granite surface plates. •

Mechanical Aptitude:

Strong understanding of stock removal rates, cutting physics, and how different metals react to heat and stress. •

Experience:

Typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent, paired with 1-3 years of specialized experience in production grinding or CNC milling environments.
