Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The Lumber Yard Worker is responsible for accurately pulling, staging, loading, unloading, and organizing lumber and building materials for customer pickups, deliveries, and inventory replenishment. This position works primarily outdoors in a fast-paced lumber yard environment and requires frequent lifting, carrying, and handling of long dimensional lumber and building materials. A critical function of this position is the safe operation of a Combi Lift (multi-directional forklift) to move, store, and retrieve long materials, including boards and lumber products up to 20 feet in length. Previous Combi Lift experience is strongly preferred; however, training may be provided to qualified candidates who demonstrate a willingness and ability to learn. This is a physically demanding position that requires employees to work safely, efficiently, and reliably in varying weather conditions. Employees should understand that the workday may extend beyond scheduled hours as needed to ensure customer orders are completed and operational demands are met. We work until the job is done. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Pull, stage, and prepare lumber and building materials for customer pickups, deliveries, and transfers. Safely handle and move dimensional lumber, mouldings, and building products, including materials up to 20 feet in length. Operate a Combi Lift and other material-handling equipment to safely transport, store, and retrieve long and oversized inventory. Load and unload trucks, trailers, and customer vehicles while ensuring product accuracy and safety. Read and interpret pick tickets, shipping documents, customer orders, and work instructions. Maintain accurate inventory locations and assist with cycle counts and inventory control activities. Organize and stock lumber yard inventory in designated storage locations. Assist with receiving incoming products and verifying quantities and condition of materials. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment throughout the lumber yard. Follow all company safety policies and procedures, including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Perform general yard maintenance duties, including housekeeping, debris removal, and organization of inventory storage areas. Work effectively with team members and supervisors to meet customer service and productivity goals. Perform additional duties as assigned to support branch operations.
EQUIPMENT OPERATION
This position regularly requires operation of: Combi Lift (multi-directional forklift) Sit-down forklifts Propane-powered material handling equipment RF scanners and inventory devices Various hand and power tools as needed Employees assigned equipment operation duties must successfully complete company-provided training and certification requirements.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Ability to safely operate or learn to operate a Combi Lift. Strong commitment to workplace safety. Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English. Ability to read a tape measure and perform basic mathematical calculations. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to prioritize work in a fast-paced environment. Reliable attendance and punctuality.
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or GED preferred. Previous lumber yard, warehouse, building materials, or forklift experience preferred. Previous Combi Lift experience strongly preferred. Any combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position will be considered.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Frequently stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift. Frequently bend, twist, stoop, kneel, climb, and reach. Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull materials weighing up to 60 pounds. Occasionally team lift materials exceeding 60 pounds. Frequently handle and maneuver long boards and building materials up to 20 feet in length. Ability to safely work around moving equipment and elevated loads. Ability to work in outdoor environments for extended periods.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Position is performed primarily outdoors in a lumber yard environment. Regular exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, rain, and snow. Frequent exposure to dust, noise, and moving equipment. Fast-paced environment with changing priorities and customer demands. Overtime may be required based on business needs. Employees are expected to remain flexible and understand that the workday may extend beyond scheduled hours when necessary to complete customer orders and operational requirements.
SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES
Follow all company safety policies and procedures. Immediately report accidents, injuries, near misses, and unsafe conditions. Properly inspect equipment before operation. Wear required PPE at all times in designated areas. Maintain a clean and hazard-free work environment. Operate all equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
