Aluminum Die Casting (HPDC) Machine Operator Job Summary The Aluminum Die Casting (High Pressure Die Casting - HPDC) Machine Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of die casting machines used to produce aluminum components. This role involves performing thorough pre- and post-shift inspections, operating machinery according to established procedures, ensuring product quality, and maintaining a safe working environment in a high-temperature, industrial setting. Key Responsibilities Pre-Shift Machine Inspection Before starting production, the operator must perform a comprehensive inspection to ensure the machine and surrounding area are safe and ready for operation: Inspect die casting machine for visible damage, leaks (hydraulic oil, water, air), or abnormal wear Verify all guards, interlocks, and safety devices are in place and functioning Check die condition (cracks, buildup, alignment issues) Confirm proper lubrication levels and that automatic lubrication systems are functioning Inspect shot sleeve, plunger tip, and ladle system for wear or obstruction Ensure cooling lines are connected and functioning properly Confirm correct die temperature settings and preheating requirements Check that emergency stop buttons and control panels are operational Ensure work area is clean, free of obstructions, and not slippery Review production schedule, work instructions, and quality specifications Machine Operation Operate HPDC equipment in a safe and controlled manner to meet production targets: Start up, monitor, and shut down die casting machines according to standard operating procedures Load molten aluminum into the machine using automated or manual ladling systems Set and adjust machine parameters (pressure, cycle time, temperature, injection speed) within approved limits Monitor machine cycles for consistency and detect abnormalities (e.g., short shots, flashing, porosity) Respond quickly to alarms, malfunctions, or process deviations Perform minor troubleshooting and adjustments; escalate issues when necessary Maintain proper documentation of production output, downtime, and issues Part InspectionQuality Control Ensure all produced parts meet required specifications and quality standards: Perform visual and dimensional inspections of cast parts Identify common defects such as cracks, porosity, cold shuts, misruns, and excess flash Use measuring tools (calipers, gauges) to verify part dimensions Follow control plans, inspection checklists, and sampling frequencies Segregate non-conforming parts and report quality issues immediately Maintain traceability of parts and production batches Work closely with quality and engineering teams to resolve defects Post-Shift Responsibilities At the end of the shift, ensure proper shutdown and handoff: Safely shut down machine or prepare for next shift operation Clean machine surfaces, remove excess aluminum, and clear debris Inspect die and tooling for wear or damage and report findings Document machine performance, issues encountered, and maintenance needs Ensure work area is clean, organized, and safe for incoming shift Communicate key information to next operator (shift handoff notes) Safety Responsibilities Working in aluminum die casting involves significant hazards. Operators must strictly follow all safety protocols: Work safely around high-temperature molten aluminum , which can cause severe burns Wear required
PPE:
heat-resistant gloves, face shield, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, flame-resistant clothing, and hearing protection Be aware of slip hazards from oils, lubricants, and metal debris Avoid contact with moving machine parts (platens, injection systems, robotic arms) Follow lockout/tagout procedures during maintenance or when clearing jams Maintain safe distances and awareness during machine cycling Report unsafe conditions immediately Follow ergonomic best practices when handling parts and materials Working Conditions High-temperature environment with exposure to molten metal Noisy industrial setting requiring hearing protection Physically demanding: standing for long periods, lifting, and repetitive motions Exposure to dust, oil mist, and industrial odors Fast-paced production environment with shift work We will provide all proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required Previous experience in die casting, foundry, or manufacturing (preferred) however not necessary; we will train you on the job. Ability to read work instructions, blueprints, and quality standards Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills Familiarity with measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers) Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety Preferred Skills Experience with high pressure die casting (HPDC) machines Knowledge of aluminum casting defects and prevention Understanding of process parameters and machine controls Forklift or crane operation experience (if applicable)
