Job Description

We are looking for a talented Packaging Technician - Level III to join our team specializing in Logistics for our Cummins Inc. facility in Fridley, MN. In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways: Drive efficiency, cost savings, and sustainability improvements by supporting daily packaging operations and implementing site‑level packaging changes under minimal supervision. Lead supplier packaging activities at the site to ensure compliance with global standards, including managing Packaging Data Sheets within the Packaging Data Management System. Strengthen material flow and cost control by managing the site's returnable packaging program, maintaining accurate inventories, and performing fleet size and demand analyses. Collaborate with Material Planning and cross‑functional teams to adjust forecasts, container flows, and packaging processes such as PFEP data, repack instructions, and maintenance cycles. Partner directly with packaging suppliers to design, qualify, and implement new packaging solutions that improve safety, quality, and production performance. Respond quickly and effectively to urgent packaging issues that impact safety, quality, environmental compliance, or production continuity. Improve product quality by identifying packaging‑related defects, submitting supplier non‑conformance claims through CQMS, and implementing corrective and preventive actions. Support team capability and operational excellence by informally guiding less experienced technicians, participating in improvement teams, and maintaining a strong focus on HSE, quality, and workplace organization. To be successful in this role you will need the following: Make sound, timely decisions that balance safety, quality, cost, and delivery to keep packaging operations and improving work moving forward. Consistently drive results by executing packaging initiatives effectively, even when facing time constraints, competing priorities, or operational challenges. Apply environmentally sustainable packaging principles to select materials and designs that reduce waste, support reuse or recycling, and minimize lifecycle environmental impact. Integrate packaging solutions seamlessly into manufacturing and supply chain operations by understanding production processes, material flow, and distribution conditions. Leverage strong packaging material and returnable packaging expertise to optimize protection, cost, and fleet performance while supporting long‑term waste and transportation reduction. Education/Experience High school diploma or certificate of completion of secondary education or equivalent experience to the extent such experience meets applicable regulations. A two-year University degree from an accredited program in Business, Engineering or a relevant field of study preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft applications, generating reports and advanced level computer skills. This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations. Requires significant relevant work experience or specialized skills obtained through education, training, or on-the-job experience in a related field. Additional Information Packaging experience preferred. Supports smooth and efficient packaging operations by driving practical improvements, resolving packaging issues, and collaborating with cross‑functional teams and suppliers to ensure safe, compliant, and cost‑effective outcomes.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities Include:
Identify opportunities to improve packaging efficiency, reduce costs, and minimize waste by supporting daily operations and implementing practical, site‑level packaging improvements. Lead supplier packaging activities at the site, ensuring alignment with Cummins standards and maintaining accurate, up‑to‑date packaging data within the packaging system, including specification collection and approval. Manage returnable packaging by ensuring proper form, fit, and function; maintaining accurate inventory; and aligning fleet sizes with actual demand. Collaborate directly with direct and indirect suppliers to develop and implement new packaging solutions that enhance safety, protect parts, and support production requirements. Respond promptly to packaging issues, particularly those with potential impacts to safety, quality, environmental compliance, or production continuity. Support product quality improvements by identifying packaging‑related issues, issuing supplier non‑conformances, and contributing to corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Support the broader team by sharing knowledge, mentoring less experienced technicians, participating in continuous improvement activities, and consistently promoting safety, quality, and strong housekeeping practices.
