Description:
Mt. Olive is seeking a qualified Syrup Maker (Day Shift) for our Capping Department at our Goldsboro Plan t. The Capping Syrup Maker is responsible for preparing, handling, and supplying syrup used in the capping process for production lines. This role ensures syrup is mixed accurately, maintained at proper quality standards, and delivered to equipment safely and efficiently to support continuous operations. Summary Measures and mixes all ingredients per formula check-off sheet for product syrups and brines. Employee may work in either syrup room located in various parts of the plant for the different lines. Keeps inventory of all product ingredients and assists lead syrup maker in recording lot number for ingredients when necessary. Duties and Responsibilities Essential Functions Measures and mixes flavorings or color ingredients in the syrup room as needed. Measures and mixes all liquid ingredients in the cover formula per check-off sheets. Carries samples of mixed formula to QC for evaluation, calculates and makes adjustments to batch as indicated. Responsible for assuring each batch of syrups and brines made are within specifications so finished jars will meet HACCP and Quality Critical limits. Responsible for assuring that the correct formula goes in the proper bottle. Operates controls to transfer formulas to mixing tanks, storage tanks, and briners. Operates temperature controls and utilizes thermometers to heat syrups to correct temperature. Cleans mixing tanks, storage tanks, briners, and brine transfer hoses and pumps with fresh water at the start of each shift. Cleans mixing tanks, storage tanks, briners and brine transfer hoses and pumps with 160 degree water at the end of each shift. Chlorines mixing tanks, storage tanks, briners and brine transfer hoses and pumps as needed. Cleans and maintains ronningen petter filters. Records inventory and lot numbers of ingredients and supplies. Assists materials' manager with inventory as needed, whether weekly or monthly. Assists in the end of the year inventory if needed. Cleans and maintains spice storage area and syrup room, including hazardous chemical labeling of storage vessels when transferred from original container. Monitors production run to assure enough cover formula is made up and as little as possible left over at the end of the shift. Supplies Production Supervisor with completed check-off sheets at the end of each shift. Responsible for assuring that there are no leaks in any hoses, pumps, and tanks. Assists Maintenance personnel in all DIN calls for pumps, valves, etc. May be assigned responsibility for 1 or more production lines on assigned shift, insuring that correct ingredients, check-off sheets, mixing tanks, storage tanks, briners, pumps and hoses are used. Only employees who have completed syrup maker training can cover in the syrup makers' absence to assure finished jars will meet HACCP and Quality Critical standards. Keeps work area clean and neat. Follows safety rules and company policies. Other Duties Works in other areas as assigned by the supervisor. Sets up, maintains and repairs machinery which cleans and cuts raw materials into relish, salad cubes, chips, strips, stuffers, etc. and which pricks whole pickles. Rebuilds gearboxes, spindle assemblies, and other parts for all machines. Rebuilds conveyors and pumps. Performs preventive maintenance on all machinery, conveyors, etc. in the department. Participates in training, employee meetings, committees, project teams, etc. as appropriate. Receives written and verbal instructions on the above job tasks and performs other duties as directed by Supervisor.

Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities High school graduate plus additional training needed. Ability to read, write and speak in English required.. Math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions needed for job tasks. Supervisory Responsibilities None Machines, Equipment, Tools Used Mixing tank, pumps, switches, valves, hoses, filter, briner, measuring equipment (including 16 and 32 oz. cylinders, measuring pitcher, scales, thermometer), screw driver, channel lock, Steel Toed Shoes.
Physical Demands Climbing:
Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the line, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.
Stooping:
Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerate degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
Crouching:
Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
Reaching:
Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Standing:
Particularly for sustained periods of time.
Walking:
Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
Pushing:
Using upper extremities to press against something with steady forces in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
Pulling:
Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion.
Lifting:
Raising objects from a lower to a high position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles.
Grasping:
Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
Talking:
Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
Hearing:
Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sound.
Repetitive Motions:
Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/ or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and\or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform and activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures: transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices, and/or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes. Work Environment Works inside, subject to some seasonal temperature variations, odors/fumes from some ingredients and intermittent wetting from some job tasks. Earplugs required because of irritating machinery noise. Some contact with grease and yellow food coloring. Head cover and beard cover required. Gloves, goggles and apron required at times.
