Job Title:
Specimen Technician Job Description The Specimen Technician accurately sorts, registers, labels, racks, and stores biological specimens while performing precise data entry and supporting the accession of frozen samples. This role works frequently in cold environments, including freezers, and involves lifting up to 50 pounds. It offers an excellent opportunity to gain experience in the scientific field and grow within a dynamic laboratory setting. Responsibilities Sort and organize incoming specimens according to established laboratory procedures. Rack and store specimens in appropriate locations, including cold storage and freezers, ensuring proper placement and tracking. Register and label specimens accurately to maintain clear identification and traceability. Perform precise data entry for specimen information, ensuring completeness and accuracy in the laboratory information systems. Support the accessioning of frozen samples by following defined workflows and instructions from leadership. Complete miscellaneous tasks delegated by leadership related to specimen processing and accessioning. Handle specimens safely and consistently while working in cold environments, including freezers. Lift, move, and transport specimen containers and related materials weighing up to 50 pounds as needed. Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant work area in accordance with laboratory safety and quality standards. Work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while meeting productivity and accuracy expectations. Collaborate with team members and leadership to ensure smooth specimen flow and timely processing. Essential Skills High school diploma or equivalent. Experience working in a fast-paced environment. Strong attention to detail when handling specimens and entering data. Accurate and efficient data entry skills. Ability to perform specimen processing tasks such as sorting, labeling, racking, and storing. Ability to perform specimen registration activities in accordance with established procedures. Capability to lift up to 50 pounds safely and repeatedly as required. Comfort working in cold environments and freezers for extended periods. Reliable work ethic and ability to follow instructions from leadership. Additional Skills & Qualifications Interest in gaining experience and building a career in the scientific or laboratory field. Strong typing skills for efficient data entry. Ability to maintain focus and accuracy while managing repetitive tasks. Willingness to work any shift as needed, including first, second, and third shifts. Openness to cross-training and developing within different departments over time. Strong teamwork and communication skills to collaborate effectively with colleagues. Work Environment This role is based in a laboratory environment with frequent work in cold areas and freezers to handle and store frozen specimens. The position requires lifting up to 50 pounds and standing or moving for extended periods while managing high volumes of specimens in a fast-paced setting. Multiple shifts are available, with first and second shifts scheduled Tuesday through Saturday (first shift: 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; second shift: 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.) and third shift scheduled Monday through Friday (9:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.). The facility offers on-site amenities such as a gym, cafeteria, and regular team-building activities, including events with food trucks and special treats. The organization promotes internal growth and provides opportunities to move into other departments within the scientific space. The dress code requires that nails do not protrude through latex gloves to maintain the effectiveness of personal protective equipment. Team members may wear T-shirts with non-offensive, non-controversial writing, though the upper body will be covered by a lab coat while in the lab. Long pants are required, with no tears or exposed ankles, and sweatpants are not permitted. Yoga pants and leggings are under review and may be restricted. Shoes must fully cover the feet, with no exposed skin and no open-toed footwear or flip-flops allowed. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Lancaster, PA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.70/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
