Job Description

Job Overview The Planer Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating the Gilbert S Series Planer equipped with the GRIP feed system within the Planer Mill. This role ensures consistent lumber quality, optimal machine performance, and smooth production flow. The Planer Operator must follow all documented Roles, Responsibilities, and Expectations (R.R.E.s) and maintain a strong focus on safety, quality, and communication. Key Responsibilities Safety
  • Operate the Planer in full compliance with all posted and communicated safety standards.
Perform pre operation safety checks before each shift and immediately report unsafe conditions, mechanical issues, or abnormal machine behavior to the Planer Mill Supervisor or Operations Manager. Follow all lockout/tagout procedures during cleaning, maintenance, or jam clearing activities. Maintain awareness of rotating equipment, pinch points, high speed feed systems, and all machine guarding requirements. Quality
  • Monitor lumber surface finish, thickness, width, and overall appearance to ensure compliance with production specifications.
Adjust planer settings—including cutterheads, pressures, feed speeds, and GRIP system components—to maintain consistent quality. Identify and report defects such as chatter, snipe, knife marks, or dimensional variation. Communicate quality concerns promptly to the Supervisor or Quality team. Production
  • Operate the planer system to meet or exceed daily production targets.
Maintain steady lumber flow by coordinating with upstream and downstream operations. Perform routine adjustments to optimize throughput and minimize downtime. Assist with knife changes, lubrication, cleaning, and minor maintenance tasks as directed. Complete assigned tasks from the Planer Mill Supervisor or Operations Manager accurately and within expected timeframes. Communication & Teamwork
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with machine operators, supervisors, maintenance, and QC teams regarding machine performance, material flow, and quality issues.
Provide timely updates on production status, equipment concerns, or workflow interruptions. Raise concerns professionally in one on one discussions with Operations Management. If concerns remain unresolved, request involvement from the next level in the chain of command, up to the Plant Manager. Equipment PM & Documentation
  • Perform Daily Preventive Maintenance (PM) on the planer system, including:
  • Checking hydraulic, lubrication, and coolant level
  • Inspecting cutterheads, feed rolls, and pressure components
  • Verifying GRIP sensors, hold downs, and feed modules
  • Checking belts, guards, and safety devices
  • Cleaning debris from the machine and surrounding area. Complete Weekly PM tasks as assigned, such as: Inspecting hydraulic hoses and fittings
  • Checking chain drives, bearings, and alignment
  • Lubricating mechanical components
  • Reporting maintenance needs or abnormal wear
  • Document all PM activities and immediately report abnormal findings to Maintenance or Operations Management. Inventory & Reporting
  • Assist with monitoring knife inventory, lubrication supplies, and planer related consumables.
  • Ensure materials, tools, and spare parts are stored in correct locations and labeled accurately.
  • Report low stock levels, missing components, or inventory discrepancies to the Supervisor or Operations Manager. Expectations
  • Maintain a professional, respectful, and safety focused approach at all times.
Support a positive work environment that promotes teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement. Follow all company policies, procedures, and R.R.E. guidelines. Participate in updates or revisions to this role's R.R.E. document and sign off on changes after review.

$21.00
