New Hire Utility - Tube Mill Operations Job Description The New Hire Utility role supports operations by learning to operate production equipment, handling aluminum products, and maintaining high standards of safety and quality. You start as a utility worker, receive comprehensive cross-training across multiple departments, and gradually specialize in a specific area once you move into a permanent role. This position involves hands-on machine operation, material movement, inspection, and packaging in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Responsibilities Learn to operate equipment associated with the tube mill and extrusion processes while following safe job practices and standard operating procedures. Support operations by assisting machine operators, monitoring equipment, and responding to production needs across different departments. Move materials on and off machines using proper lifting techniques, hoists, and other material handling equipment. Perform machine operating, quality checks, packing, and visual inspection of aluminum products to ensure all quality objectives and specifications are met. Report and review unusual conditions, equipment issues, or quality concerns with lead operators and supervisors in a timely and accurate manner. Work collaboratively on a production team, communicating frequently with team members and management to meet daily production and productivity goals. Follow all union-related guidelines as they pertain to shift movement, job bidding, and flexibility, regardless of union membership status. Participate in cross-training to learn multiple departments and processes, with the understanding that, once permanent, you will be assigned to one primary department unless you successfully bid into another. Support inventory and production flow by loading, unloading, staging, and organizing materials and products as required. Use hand tools, measuring tools such as tape measures, and basic equipment to verify dimensions and ensure product meets specifications. Perform routine cleaning and housekeeping around machines, including cleanup of grease, oil, and other hydraulic fluids associated with metals manufacturing. Adhere to all safety procedures, wear required personal protective equipment, and work safely around large, complex, and sometimes robotic machinery. Complete all required documentation accurately, including production records, quality checks, and any other operational paperwork. Demonstrate flexibility to work all three rotating shifts in the tube mill and to work overtime, including long days and up to six days per week as needed. Meet all physical demands of the job, including frequent lifting, stepping on and off machinery, bending, pushing, and pulling materials and equipment. Essential Skills 1-2 years of experience in a manufacturing, general production, or material handling environment. Experience in production support, assembly line work, or machine/assembly operations. Basic machine operating or machine operation experience in a manufacturing environment. Ability to perform general labor tasks, including loading, packaging, and basic use of hand tools. Experience with quality control, quality checks, quality assurance, and visual inspection of products. Familiarity with manufacturing processes and process flow of raw materials through production. Ability to read and use a tape measure and other basic measuring tools accurately. Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in learning new machines and processes. Ability and willingness to learn to operate a forklift if not already experienced. Ability to work all three shifts (7-3, 3-11, 11-7) in a rotating tube mill schedule and to work overtime as required. Capacity to meet physical demands, including frequent lifting of 15-50 lbs and occasional lifting or pulling up to 100 lbs with assistance. Ability to step over obstacles, climb on and off machinery, work around motorized equipment, and bend, push, and pull objects in excess of 15 lbs. Strong verbal and written communication skills for documenting work and communicating with team members and supervisors. Willingness to work in a union environment and adhere to union-related guidelines on shifts and job bidding. Comfort working around grease, oil, and hydraulic fluids as part of metals manufacturing. Additional Skills & Qualifications Prior experience in a manufacturing environment involving large or complex machinery. Previous exposure to extrusion, tube mill, or metals manufacturing processes. Forklift experience or certification is beneficial. Background in inspection, quality control, or quality assurance in a production setting. Experience operating press machines or similar industrial equipment. Demonstrated "can-do" attitude and openness to cross-training across multiple departments. Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, production-driven environment. Reliability in attendance and compliance with onboarding requirements, including all steps needed to achieve permanent status within the required timeframe. Comfort working in both newer robotic equipment environments and older legacy machinery settings. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of North Chesterfield, VA.
