Heavy Machine Operator (Excavation)

Full-time Overview We are an established excavating company, part of the Operating Engineers Local 139 Union, seeking a dependable, safety-focused Machine Operator to join our field team. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience operating heavy equipment on civil, commercial, and residential projects, with a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a commitment to quality production. Key Responsibilities Operate heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, loaders, dozers, skid steers, backhoes, rollers) to perform excavation, grading, trenching, backfilling, and material handling. Read and follow site plans, grades, and stakes; work with grade lasers, GPS/2D control, and other layout tools to achieve precise tolerances. Conduct daily equipment inspections; perform basic maintenance, cleaning, and lubrication; promptly report mechanical issues. Load and unload equipment and materials safely; assist with rigging and traffic control as needed. Coordinate closely with the foreman, laborers, and truck drivers to maintain production, sequencing, and site logistics. Adhere to all company/union policies and OSHA safety standards, including trench safety, utility locates, and proper use of PPE. Maintain accurate logs and documentation (pre-shift inspections, haul tickets, as‑built notes). Support general site tasks between machine cycles (spotting trucks, hand grading, installing shoring/box, erosion control). Qualifications Proven experience operating heavy equipment on excavation or sitework projects. Working knowledge of excavation practices, grades, slopes, trench boxes, shoring, and soil types. Ability to read plans and grade stakes; familiarity with laser and/or GPS machine control preferred. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; CDL class A is a plus. The union has certain safety/training requirements. Those will be offered all around the state at their training sites/centers. Ability to lift 50+ lbs, work outdoors in varied conditions, and stand/sit for extended periods. Strong communication, situational awareness, and teamwork skills; reliable and punctual. This will be based on status in the union, with raise opportunities based on performance in the field Health, dental, and vision insurance; Retirement plan and other benefits given to

members. Vehicle per diem Steady work from spring to fall with increased overtime in the heart of the work season. Occasional winter work Schedule and Travel Typical schedule: Monday-Friday with occasional Saturdays as needed. Local travel to project sites; occasional early starts and extended shifts based on project demands.
